I try to forget her.
It’s impossible.

Growing up together, Conor and I shared all our firsts.
First love, first kiss, first…
Not all our firsts.

We were sixteen the night she was violently assaulted while I helplessly watched.
I’ll never forget the sounds of her suffering.
Or my inconsolable agony when she left Oklahoma.

Years later, she returns to honor our teenage pact.
Except the boy she loved is gone, replaced by a ruthless cattle rancher knotted with secrets.
She doesn’t know my dark cravings or the trails of sin that lead to her.

I don’t deserve her, but one truth remains.
She’s mine.

Thanks for joining me for OctobeRec Fest. I really enjoyed spending the month of October reading a few of the many, many books I’ve procured thanks to you, my blogger/reader friends. I aimed for 9 and only completed 6 but I’m proud of my progress. 😉 And you’ll see this feature again next year!

Title: Knotted
Author: Pam Godwin
Recommended by: Michelle Hennessy (a reader I met at RARE Paris)

Knotted was intense and emotional. It made for an introduction to PGodwin’s writing that I won’t soon forget. Despite there being a few things in the story that stretched suspension of disbelief, I felt PGodwin created a story with gritty elements and engaging characters and wove something beautiful.

Conor and Jake grew up together on a ranch in Oklahoma. Their parents shared ownership and a domicile. Conor and Jake learned early on that they were mean to spend their lives together. Then one night, Conor is brutally assaulted and everything changed. Conor’s dad took her away and Jake cut off all contact. But before Conor left, she and her brother Lorne, and Jake and his brother Jaret, swore a blood pact. Years later, Conor returns to Sand…. to honor the pact and she learns a lot has happened since she left. Not only will Jake work at fulfilling the pact with her but he’ll also work at healing Conor and winning back her heart.

PGodwin deftly conveyed how an event, such as rape, can affect the victim and the victim’s family. But she also wove in threads of subterfuge, greed, and murder to create a compelling story. I’d have never guessed all that was going on. PGodwin also toyed with my emotions. I was heartbroken right along with Conor, shocked at all the revelations, and was left swooning over Jake’s attempts to win her back.

PGodwin also created believable dynamics between Jake, his brother Jaret, Conor, and her brother Lorne. Their families had been intertwined for decades and their loyalty towards one another and their actions felt genuine.

Knotted is the first in the Trails of Sin series. The subsequent books tell Jaret’s and Lorne’s stories and I’ll be reading those soon. I need all the details of these families’ connections and the betrayal that separated them. Obviously, I enjoyed my introduction to PGodwin. Thanks to Michelle for the rec!
