Weekend Wrap-up #320 – Almost the End of Summer

Posted 8 August, 2020 by Linda @ (un)Conventional Bookworms in Reviews / 29 Comments

Weekend Wrap-up is where I share my new books, as well as what happened here at (un)Conventional Bookworms and elsewhere in the blogoshpere. I’m linking up with the usual suspects, AKA Team Tynga’s Reviews and Caffeinated Reviewer.

STS #319

Stacking The Shelves, hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality is all about the latest additions to my library – virtual or actual, with books that are  bought, borrowed, won or ARCs  I will (probably) be reading soon. Without further ado, here’s what I added to my bloated shelves this past week:

The Sunday Post #259 – Weekend Wrap-up

Kim @ The Caffeinated Reviewer, is our hostess with the mostest for the weekly Sunday Post where I’m wrapping things up. It is the perfect opportunity to share what happened here on my own blog, as well as some of the happenings elsewhere in the Blogosphere.

I have been preparing the upcoming school year quite a bit these past few weeks. I’m now reading Frankenstein to share with my seniors next year, and I have a lot of fun planned for that. School is starting on August 24th, and masks will be mandatory in all our high schools inside of the buildings and anywhere else where social distancing (1.5 meters) is not possible.

We also went to Spain for a few days – we were back on Sunday last week, and we were very cautious. In Spain, even in the streets, masks are mandatory, which actually was a very nice thing. And there was a lot less people than usual in the summer, probably around 1/3 only. It was so nice to get away from home, and see the sea!

Not exactly a blog… but someone on Twitter shared this guy’s reaction video for In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, and I spent a lot of time the YouTube channel yesterday – his reaction to Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder was awesome!

Did you get some good books last week? What have you been up to this past week? Thanks for stopping by, I hope you’re enjoying your weekend, and that next week will be filled with awesome!

Glad you had a nice time in Spain! And that things went smoothly social distancing wise. That sounds like an exciting plan for the school year. I still want to read Frankenstein myself at some point. I’ve a copy buried somewhere in the TBR pile. Lol.

Nice new reads too! All totally new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy them all!

My StS will be up tomorrow, so stop by then if you can!

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

  2. In the province I live here in Belgium masks are mandatory too as soon as we go outside. It’s not fun of course but it makes me feel slightly safer since the epidemic numbers are rising again. I wish I could’ve gone on a holiday. I was supposed to go to the Belgian coast but we canceled just to be sure, didn’t seem like the best thing to do right now here. Hopefully next year though!

    Happy Reading! ♥

    • See, I think that’s actually a very good idea, Stephanie – if we all get used to just wearing a mask any time we’re not inside our own house, we might be able to get those numbers down. I sweat a ton underneath my mask, but I prefer that to getting sick!
Have a wonderful week ahead my friend 🙂

  3. Glad you managed to visit Spain and to hear they are being sensible with the masks. My daughters go back to high school next week, masks are not being worn inside. Scotland’s cases have started to rise again and I wonder if the kids going back to school next week will affect it. It’s a worry but we can’t stay inside forever can we!

    Have a lovely week.

    • It was so very nice, Heather! I don’t feel like it’s summer if I don’t get at least a few days by the sea, and we were definitely safe.
Cases have started rising here in Switzerland, too, and I was very happy to get the information about masks being mandatory in schools – as a teacher, I will even receive free masks so that I am covered at work, and for the first few days, students will also receive masks until they can get their own. I feel like the Geneva government has done a good job, and I really look forward to going back to work in two weeks!
Have a wonderful week yourself, and happy reading.

Neat to see you diving into your planning and that you got a great re-charge trip to Spain and the sea. The puppies look like they are having a good summer frolic. Kindred and Guardian’s Grace!

    Have a good week, Linda!

    • I am so excited about this coming year, Sophia! I can’t imagine being able to ‘just’ teach, and not also go to Uni 🙂 I’m very motivated and can’t wait for school to start again.
The puppies are definitely happy with frolicking and playing in the field.
Have a wonderful week yourself 🙂

  5. School is almost here! Man, did this summer fly by. Good luck with starting and hope all goes well. Glad you got to visit Spain as well, it’s nice to hear they’re taking masking seriously there and whatnot. The sea sounds nice!

    Take care this week!

  6. Lovely to hear you enjoyed your holiday to Spain and good luck with the start of the new school year, sounds like you’re well organised for it already. We don’t return to school till the 3rd September, but don’t really what that will look like yet! Take care and happy reading! ?

How wonderful that you were able to get away AND that they’re doing so good with masks and social distancing in Spain. It’s so frustrating here in the US ?

Frankenstein is so fun! Have you read Mary’s Monster? It’s a graphic novel (which I really don’t read) about Mary’s life and its fascinating to connect her experiences to the book she wrote. Might be interesting for your high school students too! I’m so sad to not be getting ready to teach. Everytime I read teacher posts I long for it. But I know I’m doing what’s right for my family. If only teachers made a real income and were treated with respect here. ? I hope your year gets off to a great start!

    Miss you!! Hugs ❤️❤️❤️

Frankenstein is good choice for young readers. I am glad to hear that the masks are mandatory when the school reopens, unlike our dear American friends.

  9. Glad that you got a chance to get away to Spain for a break, before your preparation for school nocks up… Frankenstein is a great set text:)). Have a good week, Linda.

  10. Frankenstein is a great choice for your seniors. That was an interesting book and one of my favorites. Even just about the author is fascinating.

Spain sounds so nice, we went to the shore house a couple times but it just doesn’t feel the same right now. Next year will be better.

Have a great week, Linda! I miss your face! Happy Reading! xx

  11. Stevie Wonder is fantastic!! Gotta watch that video. 🙂

Its interesting how each country handles the mask mandates. We here just allow the businesses determine it. But 90% of ppl I see wear them, although I only wear them outside if I am near people. If I am not, I take it off, I do love fresh air and sunshine. 🙂 Which I am grateful I don’t live in a big city where there is less people.

I hope you enjoy the ARC from Zanetti. She is fabulous. And the Dark Protectors is such a fun series.

  12. Oh a trip to Spain! That sounds amazing. I’ve always wanted to visit there. As much as I love the movie adaptations I have never read Frankenstein. I should get on that because I love me some Gothic horror.

  13. Literary Feline

I’ve always wanted to read Kindred. I hope you enjoy it when you do! I also hope you enjoy your other books as well!

I wish you the best with the coming school year. It certainly is going to be different, isn’t it? My daughter started school today and everything is virtual.

I am glad you had a nice time in Spain! Love the photo of the dogs. 🙂

Take care and have a great week!

Oh wow – I saw the Phil Collins reaction on Twitter, but I didn’t know he had a whole channel. That was awesome. Thanks!

Hope back to school goes smoothly.
