Stacking The Shelves #25 – Getting Ready for LGBT Month

Stacking The Shelves, hosted by Tynga’s Reviews is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

April is LGBT month! At least if you’re participating in the challenge! LGBT Month is hosted by Cayce at Fighting Dreamer and Laura at Laura Plus Books. It runs throughout April and it’s here to celebrate LGBT readers, LGBT authors and of course LGBT books! Since I am participating, I am getting ready to read some LGBT books, and some of them are included here today.

Netgalley ARCs:

I am Zlatan cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsI am Zlatan – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Daring, flashy, innovative, volatile—no matter what they call him, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of soccer’s brightest stars. A top-scoring striker with Paris Saint-Germain and captain of the Swedish national team, he has dominated the world’s most storied teams, including Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and AC Milan. But his life wasn’t always so charmed.

Born to Balkan immigrants who divorced when he was a toddler, Zlatan learned self-reliance from his rough-and-tumble neighborhood. While his father, a Bosnian Muslim, drank to forget the war back home, his mother’s household was engulfed in chaos. Soccer was Zlatan’s release. Mixing in street moves and trick plays, Zlatan was a wild talent who rode to practice on stolen bikes and relished showing up the rich kids—opponents and teammates alike. Goal by astonishing goal, the brash young outsider grew into an unlikely prodigy and, by his early twenties, an international phenomenon.

Told as only the man himself could tell it, featuring stories of friendships and feuds with the biggest names in the sport, I Am Zlatan is a wrenching, uproarious, and ultimately redemptive tale for underdogs everywhere.

One Man Guy cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsOne Man Guy – Michael Barakiva

Alek Khederian should have guessed something was wrong when his parents took him to a restaurant. Everyone knows that Armenians never eat out. Why bother, when their home cooking is far superior to anything “these Americans” could come up with? Between bouts of interrogating the waitress and criticizing the menu, Alek’s parents announce that he’ll be attending summer school in order to bring up his grades. Alek is sure this experience will be the perfect hellish end to his hellish freshmen year of high school. He never could’ve predicted that he’d meet someone like Ethan.
Ethan is everything Alek wishes he were: confident, free-spirited, and irreverent. When Ethan gets Alek to cut school and go to a Rufus Wainwright concert in New York City’s Central Park, Alek embarks on his first adventure outside the confines of his suburban New Jersey existence. He can’t believe a guy this cool wants to be his friend. And before long, it seems like Ethan wants to be more than friends. Alek has never thought about having a boyfriend—he’s barely ever had a girlfriend—but maybe it’s time to think again.
Michael Barakiva’s One Man Guy is a romantic, moving, laugh-out-loud-funny story about what happens when one person cracks open your world and helps you see everything—and, most of all, yourself–like you never have before.

Taken With You cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsTaken With You (Kowalski Family #8) – Shannon Stacey

Hailey Genest has seen most of her friends marry and have babies, and she’s happy for them, but it was a lot easier before she hit forty. She’s spent her entire life in Whitford, Maine, and if she hasn’t found her Prince Charming by now, she has to accept she’s probably not going to. When a new friend suggests they go on an adventure and embrace being single, Hailey agrees.

Surviving in the woods is game warden Matt Barnett’s idea of a relaxing vacation. But when he meets two women in need of help, he leads them back to safety – a task that proves more fun than expected, thanks to a certain hot blonde. He can’t resist pushing her buttons, even though she’s made it clear that the rugged, outdoorsy type just isn’t for her.

Hailey is glad to see the back of her tempting-tour-guide-slash-pain-in-the-ass. When he shows up in her life again, she’s determined to avoid him, no matter how good he looks in his uniform. But that’s easier said than done in Whitford, especially when he’s renting the house right next door…

Guns cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsGUNS: Spencer’s Book (Rook and Ronin Spinoff) – J.A. Huss *My review will be posted on April 2nd*

THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE BOOK. YOU MUST READ ALL THE OTHER BOOKS IN THIS SERIES FIRST.

ALL. OF. THEM.**

Spencer Shrike is a man with a plan. Get in. Get out. Move on. He loves Ron the Bomb, and her safety is the only thing on his mind these days. But life is a tricky bastard, and conning criminals for the better part of ten years brings its own set of problems. Sure, Rook lied her way out of a sticky situation, covering for crimes Ronin, Ford, and Spencer committed, and getting them all off scot-free in the process.

But not everyone is buying Rook’s story, and Spencer is desperate to figure out who’s in town setting them up for a fall.

Veronica the Bombshell Vaughn has put up with Spencer Shrike’s shit for years and where has it gotten her? A big fat nowhere. No ring, no house, no kids, and no promises. In fact, Spencer is worse than ever—completely distant and moody. She’s done sitting at home, pining over a man she can’t have.

But she’s not opposed to fighting for him.

Ron the Bomb fights hard and she fights dirty, so she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get Spencer’s attention.

But now there’s another man in town with his eye on her. He’s got secrets too, but unlike Spencer, Bobby Mansi is more than willing to let Veronica in on them.

The entire Rook and Ronin series comes full circle. Every con, every lie, and every skeleton in the closet is back for one final shot at vengeance and the only way to set it right… is to get out the guns.

ARCs From Author:

A Few Are Chosen cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsFew Are Chosen – Storm Grant

Sparks fly between virgin teenage demon hunters when the Chosen One turns out to be the Chosen . . . Two?

Apprentice warrior Blake St. Blake is the Chosen One, raised by an ancient order to defend the world against evil. Well, maybe not the whole world, but at least his neighborhood in downtown Detroit. When a dreaded reflux demon is sighted in a local cemetery, Blake is sent off to his very first battle, armed with his sword, his super-senses, his black leather duster, and a few well-rehearsed one-liners.

But another Chosen One gets in Blake’s way—an apprentice wizard named Shadow. While the boys argue about who’s the more chosen of the two, the demon escapes.

Blake wants to be angry, but it turns out he and Shadow have a lot in common. Besides, Shadow’s pretty cute, and Blake can’t help but think that the wizard’s skills (and hands and lips and other bits) might make the perfect complement to his. Blake and Shadow are brave enough to challenge the reflux demon in a second battle, but will they have the courage to tell each other how they feel?

Scythe Does Matter cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsScythe Does Matter (The Reluctant Reaper #2) – Gina X. Grant

Kirsty’s afterlife gets even more Hellish in this second installment of The Reluctant Reaper series when her soul-stealing ex-boss targets her beloved aunt. Her only chance to stop him? Becoming a Reaper herself. Fortunately, her hunky new boyfriend, Italian-poet-turned-Reaper Dante Alighieri, is there to help.Still trapped in the bureaucratic inferno known as Hell, Kirsty d’Arc redoubles her efforts to escape back to the Mortal Coil when she learns Conrad is after the soul of her beloved aunt. To save Aunt Carey, Kirsty must enroll at the Reaper Academy and earn a scythe of her own. Studying topics like Exor-scything 101, Riding the Death Cycle, and Reincarnation for Dummies is strange. But then, so are her classmates: a fallen angel, the Death Valley girls, and Kali—the ancient god of death, destruction, and those little earring backs that always go missing.

Now time is running out thanks to a temporal crisis she may have accidentally created. Can she graduate, rescue her aunt, take down Conrad, and save Hell and every other dimension—before the clock stops ticking?

As the saying goes in Hell, “Be careful what you wish for; it just might get you!”

Esprit de Corpse cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsEsprit de Corpse (The Reluctant Reaper #3) – Gina X. Grant

In the third hilarious installment of The Reluctant Reaper series, Kirsty d’Arc’s first Reaper mission gets personal when her evil ex-boss escapes from Hell and physically possesses Shannon, Kirsty’s BFF. To reunite rightful body and soul, Kirsty must outwit a demented demon, fend off an insane strangler, and bend the very rules of Hell and Earth.Kirsty may be a full-fledged Reaper with a scythe of her own, but Dante is still miffed that she broke the Reaper rules to take down her evil ex-boss, Conrad. And Dante is not above saying “I told you so” when Conrad develops strange demonic powers and escapes to the Mortal Coil. Although barely speaking, Kirsty and Dante are sent on Kirsty’s first Reaper mission: bring Conrad back alive…er…dead…er…Just bring him back to Hell.

But before they can re-scythe him, Conrad evicts his own daughter’s soul to take over her body. Yes, he’s not a good person. So it’s up to two good people (who are, ironically, from Hell) to fix this. But can Kirsty and Dante put their differences aside in time to take down Conrad and save his daughter?

Wolf in Gucci Loafers cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsWolf in Gucci Loafers (Tales of the Harker Pack #2) – Tara Lain

Socialite Lindsey Vanessen wants someone to love who will love him back — an impossibility for a gay, half-human, half-werewolf. Too aggressive for humans, too gay for wolves, and needing to protect the pack from human discovery, Lindsey tries to content himself with life as a successful businessman. But when someone starts kidnapping members of wealthy families, Lindsey meets tough cop Seth Zakowsy—the hunky embodiment of everything Lindsey wants but can’t have.

Seth has never been attracted to flamboyant men. What would the guys in the department think of Lindsey? But intrigue turns to lust when he discovers Lindsey’s biting, snarling passion more than matches his dominant side. It might mean a chance at love for a cop in black leather and a wolf in Gucci loafers.

Remember to leave me your link so I can check out your Stacking the Shelves post, too 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! Have a spectacular Saturday.

  1. I can’t wait for your review of Guns! I’ll be out of town, but I’ll check it out when I get back. I have my eye on One Man Guy, but for LGBT Month I’m still deciding what I want to read. Happy reading, Lexxie!!

Do I have to read the Ford and Spencer novellas to read Guns and fully appreciate it? I did read the “ALL. OF. THEM.” And still I ask.

    • LOL Robyn, yes, I actually think your enjoyment of Guns will be much more if you have also read the Ford and Spencer novellas. There are some things in there that bring other stuff to light. But if you’ve read the novels, you already know the guys pretty well.

One Man Guy was awesome, Robyn! It is so well done, so cute, and with amazing characters.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

    • It is really, really awesome, Bieke, I read it in one sitting yesterday. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

    • I really enjoyed the first one, Melliane 🙂

My husband has already read Moi, Zlatan in French, and he really enjoyed it 🙂 I hope I will, too.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

    • I laughed out loud in several places in the first one, so hopefully the next two will be fun, too.

Thanks for stopping by, Shelley 🙂

    • I only just heard of some of them, and they just seemed too good not to try them out 😀

      Thanks for stopping by, Vickie.

    • I have only read her Rook and Ronin series plus the spin-off of that one, Janina. Her Rook and Ronin (three books) omnibus is on sale for $0.99 on kindle right now if oyu want to try it…

      Thanks for stopping by.

    • Don’t feel bad, Melanie! I have not been visiting much lately, either, so busy 🙁 But it’s very nice to see you here today!!

LGBT month is going to be great, I enjoy reading books with more diversity, and I think that talking about LGBT is important:)

      I hope you’re having a fantastic Sunday.

    • Seeing books I hadn’t heard of before on other blogs is one of my favorite things about Stacking the Shelves, 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by!

    • I think the whole Rook and Ronin series plus the spin-offs are totally hot, Lindy. We’ll have to see just how many books I’ll actually have the time to read for LGBT month, as I have a lot of work to hand in for Uni, and for our spring-break, we’re going to New York…

Thanks for stopping by, my friend 🙂

    • Sometimes, I almost wish I would only read, not review 😀 But at the same time, writing down my thoughts of a book helps me completely ‘finish’ it 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by, Lyn.

  2. Oh man, Lexxie! You picked up some great books this week!! One day I’ll figure out your secret to doing all you do and reading/reviewing too! 😉 I’m gonna try to get my LGBT post done today. I was thinking that I hadn’t read that many books with LGBT characters…and then I realized I’ve actually read more than I thought. And some good ones! Anyway, I’m so glad you’re posted about this so I could participate as well.

I hope you enjoy ALL your new books!! Happy reading and **BIG HUGS**
