Review ~ Kindred – A Graphic Novel Adaptation ~ Octavia Butler, Damian Duffy, John Jennings

Review ~ Kindred – A Graphic Novel Adaptation ~ Octavia Butler, Damian Duffy, John Jennings

I read the graphic novel adaptation of Kindred at the request of my daughter, Berk. She read it at the beginning of her freshman year of college (2019) and was so moved by it she wanted to share. I was equally moved by it and I intend to read the novel now as well. The story told in Kindred – that of a black woman being continually pulled back in time to save her white ancestor – translated well as a graphic novel. The illustrations superbly conveyed the setting, mood, and emotion of the story and characters. I don’t feel qualified to discuss the finer details of a graphic novel since this is only the third one I’ve ever read […]

Review: The Night Mark – Tiffany Reisz

Review: The Night Mark – Tiffany Reisz

The Night Mark deals with hope – how we need hope to move forward. To get out of bed in the morning. To care for ourselves and others. To care for our planet. The Night Mark has a magical feel to it, and a lot of that comes from Reisz’s excellent writing. It’s like a novel in a poem with a fantastical story in which realistic characters live their lives to the best of their abilities. Hope and love are strong themes, and I had to wipe away a few tears at the ending, because it was so sweet and tender, and I wanted to stay with the characters a little longer. I think what I love the most every […]

Review: The Operator – Kim Harrison

Review: The Operator – Kim Harrison

The Operator is a very twisty tale, where Peri continues to try her best to do what’s right, but with no idea who is telling her the truth, and who wants the same things she wants. If you haven’t read Sideswiped, The Drafter and Waylaid yet, you should stop reading this review right now! There are things that happens in The Operator that might spoil the prior books for you, and believe me, you don’t want that to happen! This story is quite tense, because Peri has managed to live on her own for almost a year, managing her own coffee shop, and staying low so that Bill won’t find her. Which works pretty well, until Silas approaches her at […]

Review: Waylaid – Kim Harrison

Review: Waylaid – Kim Harrison

Waylaid proves that size doesn’t matter as long as it’s done correctly. Harrison managed to truly make her characters shine in this short-story. I wouldn’t be against more crossovers between The Hollows and The Drafter series, because Waylaid gave me the best of both worlds – namely Rachel, Jenks and Peri! It was a fun, short rump, and it was great seeing Rachel and Peri trying to figure each other out. For those who have not completely finished The Hollows series, there may be some small spoilers, but nothing major. The way Rachel was deposited into Peri’s world made me laugh, because Peri really doesn’t believe in supernatural happenings, even if she herself can go back in time to change things. […]
