2016 New Release Challenge
The 2016 New Release Challenge is a year-long challenge in which we aim to read books released in 2016. I am lucky enough to have an awesome co-host for the New Release Challenge, Stormi @ Books, Movies, Reviews Oh My! is here to share both the fun and the burden 😉 There will be monthly update posts, and each quarter – the end of March, end of June, end of September and in December, there will be a giveaway with the update as well.
In 2015, so far, I have read 132 books read that were released this year, and I don’t see why this should be any different next year. This is why I wanted a New Release Challenge, and at the beginning of 2015, I searched high and wide for one. After a while of google-fu, I found one, but it’s not exactly the way I wanted the challenge to be, therefore, the new release challenge is loosely inspired by Olivia at Book Comet: 2015 New Releases Reading Challenge. And her challenge might be 100% the way you want a New Release Challenge to be. As soon as I decided to actually host a challenge, I contacted Stormi, who was also happy to host a year-long challenge, and now, we’ll have each other’s backs!
We have also created a Facebook Group for the 2016 New Release Challenge, to have a place where we can keep up with each other, cheer each other on, and get to know each other better. It is also a place where we can help each other find even more 2016 releases.
The rules for the 2016 New Release Challenge are simple:
- Books have to be released and reviewed in 2016.
- Other challenges can be used as well, if you are participating in the Netgalley / Edelweiss challenge or in the COYER challenge, books can count towards more than one challenge, as long as the ones you use for the 2016 New Release Reading Challenge qualify to the other rules.
- The minimum length for a book to qualify is 100 pages, it can be in any format though, physical, e-book, ARC or audiobook.
- The New Book Release Challenge is open from January 1st through December 31st 2016, and sign-ups are open until February 15th 2016.
- You don’t have to be a blogger to participate, you can link to your review on Goodreads or Booklikes instead – so don’t be shy!
There are four levels in the New Release Challenge:
- 1-15 books per year – New Release Newbie
- 16-30 books per year – New Release Pro
- 31-45 books per year – New Release Veteran
- 45+ books per year – New Release Enthusiast
To sign up, please link your sign-up post in the linky below, and also make sure you use the quarterly linky for your reviews, as that will be the way the giveaway winner will be chosen. You can choose if you want to do monthly or quarterly challenge updates on your blog, but you will have the possibility to link up each month with your reviews, and every quarter for the giveaway.
It would be great if you used the hashtag #2016NewReleaseChallenge when you tweet about it, and post a review, so that it is easier to find your review on the day you post it 🙂
Also, if you’re not sure where you can find out about new releases, I have a Goodreads 2016 Releases shelf to help you get started, and here’s a screenshot of some of the books I’ve added to it:
Because I read a whole lot of books each year, I’m aiming for the New Release Enthusiast myself 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you’ll join us, and that you will have fun with this challenge.
Sounds fun! I haven’t decided what (if any) challenges I’ll do for 2016 yet. But one thing is for sure, I’ll be reading new releases! So I might just join in this one as I’m doing it anyway 😀 Will have a think.
It is fun, and I think most of us read at least a few new releases every year, Trish. It would be great if you signed up with us, we are pretty laid back 😉
I am so glad you’re hostign this challenge again! I defintiely will sign-up again. And sounds like it will be even bigger and more awesome this year. I like the idea of a facebook group. I’ll have to incorporate this one into my challenge goal post I’ve scheduled for December. Now if only I can actually remember to use the hashtag next year.
Stormi and I are both happy to continue with this challenge, Lola, and it’s great to know you’ll continue with us 🙂
I actually forget about the hashtag myself sometimes… 😉

I joined Lexie…I am after all an addict I went with 45.
Book addicts unite!!
Strongly considering this one, at the lowest level! I love the idea of challenges, but then I get overwhelmed. This isn’t genre specific or anything though, or pre-determined, so that helps a lot!
This is just for books – no matter the genre or age-group, it just has to be 2016 releases 🙂 I hope you’ll join, Shaunesay 😀

I did really well on this, this year. Just didn’t keep track like I wanted to but I am determined to keep better track this year. Going to make my sign up post in a few week! 🙂 So glad you girls are doing it again!
WooHoo, Michelle! I’m glad you did well this year 🙂 I keep a shelf on Goodreads, which really makes it easy for me to keep up, and to know which books I need to write reviews for and stuff.
Thanks for stopping by!
Good luck with your challenge! I do like this idea. I feel like I did pretty well this past year reading newly released titles, but I know i could always do better. I’ll have to think about joining…I’m so bad at keeping up with challenges. haha
Even if you don’t keep up all the time, you could join and also be a part of the Facebook group, Lauren 🙂 I’m sure we’ll all have a lot of fun!
This sounds like a fun challenge. I have been hemming and hawing on whether I want to do challenges this next year.
Ha! If you decide to enter a challenge, I think it should be this one, Jennifer 😉
AHHH THIS SOUNDS GREAT!! I have to think about it, but I hopefully will come back and sign up. 😀 I’m horrible at doing challenges, but new releases?!? I GOT THIS. *nods*
You sure have got this, Cait! I definitely think you should sign up for all this fun 😉
I’m in! And one of my resolutions for next year is to link up my reviews every month instead of twice a year! LOL I’m thinking of doing something on my blog that might? keep me from reading as many new releases next year. But we’ll see. I didn’t think I’d read as many this year as I did, so… I’m glad you and Stormi are hosting this again next year. 🙂 **BIG HUGS**
YAY, Brandee! I often suck at linking up my reviews for challenges as well… let’s both try to do better this year 😉 *BIG HUGS*

Hi Lexxie,
I have found of netgally that there are many books that are set to be “published in 2016”, but when I search them on goodreads, it shows that they were first published a year (or more) before. I assume, for the sake of this challenge, that the books must be a true 2016 books, being published first in that year and not as a re-release (not sure the official term). Would that be correct?
Thank you!
I’m discussing this with Stormi, Ashley. I think that if there has been a big overhaul, the new release date should count. Or if it was released in another country than yours before – the release date in your country should count.
We’ll post something about it once we’ve finished talking about it.
I’m in! I didn’t do any challenges last year, and am trying to plan ahead this year so I don’t miss out again. Thanks for hosting.
I’m so happy you’re signing up, Steph! I hope you’ll enjoy the challenge and that we’ll get to know each other better 🙂
What a great idea for a challenge! I love this and definitely will be participating! http://www.hippiesreadtoo.com/p/2016-new-release-challenge.html
That’s awesome, Julie! I look forward to seeing which 2016 books you’ll pick for the challenge!
I’m in again for next year. I did really good but I’ll stick with New Release Pro as a goal.
That’s awesome, Kathy! I’m glad you’re participating once more 🙂
This is cool! I’m considering doing challenges this year, haha. Maybe I will join! Fingers crossed!
You should definitely join, Amy! It’s a fun challenge 🙂
I hope to!
It’s sounds like fun. I’m in 😉
Awesome, Silvy 🙂
I can’t participate in many challenges but this is one I can’t miss! Thanks for setting it up Lexxie! 🙂
I hope we’ll have fun with all the new releases this year, Daniela 🙂
I’m going for Newbie. Thanks for hosting this challenge for its second year. I love to work on books that aren’t new releases, but I like to keep up with authors and find new authors through new releases.
Good luck reaching your goal, Rachael… I tend to read almost too many new releases, and leave my ‘older’ books alone. I need to keep up with both this year 🙂
So, I just signed up and hope that I did it right! Looking forward to this challenge *smile*
I’m so happy you decided to join us, Vi! It looks like you did everything right 🙂 your link goes straight to your sign-up post.
Have a great weekend, and good luck reaching your goal.
I was wondering if I could add books I read during the 1q to the 2q link up because I forgot to link up.
Hi Alahna 🙂 Sorry I didn’t see your comment before now! You can only link up reviews that were posted in the correct quarter, as that is what I check when I get the random number for the quarterly giveaway.
I hope that helps 🙂
