Review: Wicked Edge – Rebecca Zanetti

Review: Wicked Edge – Rebecca Zanetti

Wicked Edge had one of the most kick-ass heroines I have ever had the pleasure of encountering! Felicity was made of steel, capable, intelligent and very strong in a fight! And of course, I enjoyed her verbal sparring with Daire as well. My Wicked Edge review: CeeCee seemed like an innocent, sweet young woman at the beginning of Wicked Edge, and Daire definitely agreed with me. Until he ended up flat on his back in his own apartment, drugged, and left behind. CeeCee also managed to keep everyone on their toes, because she was a very good planner, could hold her own in a fight, and had a grudge that wouldn’t disappear. Of course, Daire couldn’t let it stand that […]

Review: Lair of Dreams – Libba Bray

Review: Lair of Dreams – Libba Bray

The plot thickens in Lair of Dreams, with more players in the big game of Diviners, and several sub-plots to bring the main one to light. Well written with many characters who do their best to stay true to themselves, it was an exciting story. My Lair of Dreams review: There are even more things going on in the lives of the characters in Lair of Dreams than there was in The Diviners! Evie has her own radio show, but that plus the partying is more tiring than exciting to her as time goes on. Especially Henry and Ling are more present as they have to navigate the dreams of others to try to find out what is really going […]

Review: The Iron Hunt – Marjorie M. Liu

Review: The Iron Hunt – Marjorie M. Liu

Quite different from what I expected based on the summary, The Iron Hunt is a story in which all kinds of secrets are being kept very close to the vest by most characters, and thus, the whole storyline and plot became a little dis-jointed to me. My The Iron Hunt review: I expected a fast-paced kind of crazy story when I picked up The Iron Hunt, because the summary mentions demon-hunting and tattoos coming to life. However, apart from Maxine’s tattoos coming to life, there isn’t really much hunting going on at all. And Maxine has been left without all the information she needed in order to make the right decisions moving forward. Also, I felt that for a full […]

Blogtour Review: Omega – Lizzy Ford

Blogtour Review: Omega – Lizzy Ford

Omega is a tale including Gods from Greek mythology, as well as a girl who has trained her whole life for survival, without knowing why. My Omega review: I think that reading the prequels to this novel made me enjoy Omega even more, as I got to know the main characters in their previous life, and knew more about some of them than they did themselves. That being said, I am sure it’s possible to enjoy this story without the prequels, as the story is solid, with good introductions to the characters, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as a good dose of world-building that unfolded as Alessandra discovered the world outside of the monastery where she grew up. The […]

Review: The Diviners – Libba Bray

Review: The Diviners – Libba Bray

The Diviners is a very complex story, with historical aspects from the ’20s in NYC, magic, ghosts, weird powers, and many characters to follow on their creepy adventures. My The Diviners review: I had no idea what to expect when I picked up The Diviners, I hadn’t really heard much about it before I bought my own copy, after received an ARC of Lair of Dreams… What I got was a complex story, following several characters just discovering their new ‘powers’ of divining, seeing the future – or the past by touching an object – healing and others. Following several characters took a while getting used to, because they were all well fleshed out with a distinctive voice, however, through […]

Review: Menagerie – Rachel Vincent

Review: Menagerie – Rachel Vincent

On the surface, Menagerie is the story of creatures that are not completely human, living in a sort of traveling zoo. However, if we scratch even lightly, right underneath that surface is a tale about morals, ethics, respect and justice. My Menagerie review: Menagerie started out as a cute story, complete with a class of fifth-graders visiting a traveling menagerie for a field-trip. Delilah was a little uneasy with some of the creatures of the exhibit, especially one in which there were three young girls sitting on the ground in a cage in the petting zoo. Fast forward to Delilah’s 25th birthday, and she’s back in the same menagerie, with her best friend and both of their boyfriends. And this […]

Review: Angelfall – Susan Ee

Review: Angelfall – Susan Ee

Angelfall is a dystopian story in which angels aren’t necessarily the good guys, and where Penryn has to use all her wit and cunning to survive. My Angelfall review: This whole story was dark and disturbing – but still delicious if that makes any sense at all. Penryn is a very strong young woman; she has had to be for years before the attack. With her mom conversing with demons and her little sister Paige in a wheel chair, Penryn had to be the responsible party of her family after her dad took off. The angels in this story are so scary and mean it seems like they all hail from hell rather than from heaven – all except Raffe, […]

Review: The Drafter – Kim Harrison

Review: The Drafter – Kim Harrison

The Drafter is a fast-paced story, in a world I would never want to live in! Peri is a very strong character, but so many people are trying to take advantage of her, leaving her with less memories of who she is, and what she’s been doing. My The Drafter review: The Drafter shows how hard life is for Peri, and how much she has to trust her anchor to bring back the right pieces of her memory after a draft. The way she is able to shift time to change some details, and leave everyone apart from Jack none the wiser. When an assignment goes slightly wrong, she has lost memories of the pas six months, and she is […]

Review: Sideswiped – Kim Harrison

Review: Sideswiped – Kim Harrison

Sideswiped is the prequel novella to Harrison’s new series The Peri Reed Chronicles, and it sets the background for both the overall story and the characters. Mysterious and dealing prominently with time travel or time change, while also showing how agents are being trained in order to be able to work for a very secret government organization. My Sideswiped review: In Sideswiped, we first meet Silas, Allen and Summer, they’re just days away from graduation at the OPTI and Silas is feeling nostalgic about possibly not seeing Summer as much in the future once she starts having assignments as a drafter. It is evident from the start that even the professors teaching the future generation of agents are not always […]

Review: Obsidian – Jennifer L. Armentrout

Review: Obsidian – Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian was a little confusing in places, and I was quite frustrated with Katy because of her suffering from something very close to insta-love/lust when it came to Daemon. She said he was a jerk, but then she went all googly-eyed at the thought of him anyway. My Obsidian review: There are many tropes in young adult novels – and sadly most of those I don’t really enjoy – that were present in Obsidian. More or less absent parents, as Katy’s father had died, and her mother worked a lot, it was almost as if Katy lived on her own. Also, Katy was really the girl-next-door, at least in her own mind, and so Daemon’s attention, even when he was […]
