Review: Say You Still Love Me – K.A. Tucker

Review: Say You Still Love Me – K.A. Tucker

Say You Still Love Me is a strong love story, where the past plays a very important role in the present – for all the characters. I’m a huge fan of second chance romances, and in Say You Still Love Me, Kyle and Piper worked on getting theirs. I loved a lot of things about this story, but I found the beginning to be a bit slow, and the ending to be a bit ‘easy’. That said, the story worked well for me, and I found the flashbacks to bring a lot to the present. The characters in Say You Still Love Me were relatable, and I wanted them to work things out. Especially as the flashes from the past […]

Review: Mrs. Everything – Jennifer Weiner

Review: Mrs. Everything – Jennifer Weiner

Mrs. Everything spans over several decades, following Bethie and Jo, two sisters born after the 2nd world war, living their childhood in Detroit. Story: With Mrs. Everything – Weiner managed to weave a story in which two sisters growing up in the fifties have to deal with a lot of different things… being Jewish in a place where they don’t always feel like they belong is one of them. Jo also had to deal with knowing she liked girls – and that that was ‘unnatural’. Bettie only wanted to stay beautiful and thin when she was a teen, because she wanted to be a star. Of course, their dreams didn’t come true. As in real life – life happened, and […]

ARC Review: The Simple Wild – K.A. Tucker

ARC Review: The Simple Wild – K.A. Tucker

The Simple Wild is a strong story, with characters who desperately need to make amends, and to move forward instead of looking backwards. Story: The Simple Wild starts with a day Calla thinks is the worst day of her life – losing her job, going back home to her mom and step-dad. Then, going out, seeing her boyfriend all cozy with another woman. Only, this wasn’t the worst day – that was yet to come. Because Calla’s mom didn’t enjoy living in the Alaskan wilderness, Calla grew up without a father. And as The Simple Wild unfolded, it was clear that the feeling of being abandoned and not important was very strong for Calla. Her father even stopped calling her […]

Review: Keep Her Safe – K.A. Tucker

Review: Keep Her Safe – K.A. Tucker

Watch out, everybody! Romantic suspense has a new queen, Tucker totally nailed it with Keep Her Safe. There are ugly secrets, dirty cops, a beautiful love story, and some incredibly difficult decisions to make. Story: Keep Her Safe is an excellent romantic suspense, and I have to say Tucker nailed this new writing adventure! I found the mystery part extremely well done, and the layers upon layers of deceit made me wonder about what had truly happened. It also took me a very long time to finally figure out who was the main culprit that made the evil ball start rolling. The pace was fast enough to make me feel like the story moved along nicely, and the way the […]

Review: In the Midst of Winter – Isabel Allende

Review: In the Midst of Winter – Isabel Allende

In the Midst of Winter is a beautiful, melancholy tale, in which Allende intricately, yet seamlessly weaves three different pasts into a common present. Story: Not only does In the Midst of Winter span over several decades, it also includes four different countries. Allende’s lyrical writing brings the character to life, and with all their intricacies and flaws, they became very real to me. As usual, Allende doesn’t shy away from political turmoil, and with bright colours, she paints a vivid picture of the characters’ lives.  From the countryside in Guatemala, to Rio de Janeiro, via Santiago and to Brooklyn. The cold, stark feeling of reality that was strong during the story never kept the hope at bay. Especially when […]

Review: Without Merit – Colleen Hoover

Review: Without Merit – Colleen Hoover

Without Merit brought out all the feels, and it also explained the DYS when it comes to dysfunctional families and relationships. I loved every word! Story: Merit, the main character, is fairly self-absorbed, and still, I really loved her. Growing up in a household with three children with less than a year between them (total). And an identical twin sister whom she doesn’t really get along with, Merit lives inside her own head quite a bit. Between the resentment she feels towards her family, and the weirdness she feels about school, she throws herself a curve-ball and then tries to just go with it. There is a lot going on in Without Merit, and most of it has to do […]

Review: Wish You Were Here – Renée Carlino

Review: Wish You Were Here – Renée Carlino

Wish You Were Here was a very emotional story, filled with love and hope, and beautifully written characters. Story: Charlotte has never felt ready to settle down, not with a man, not with her education, and not with a job. She was quite lost for a while, until she met Adam for one magical night of getting to know him, and feeling both loved and beautiful. Even if he was acting strangely. Afterwards, it took her a long way to get her self confidence back, in spite of the fact that meeting Seth was nice. Still, Adam was on her mind, and through some fateful circumstances, they met again. Only for her to understand that Adam hadn’t left his loft […]

Review: Until it Fades – K.A. Tucker

Review: Until it Fades – K.A. Tucker

Until it Fades features an extremely hot hockey player, a single-mom waitress and a strong connection that one of them wants to keep private. Catherine and Brett didn’t exactly meet, but at the beginning of Until it Fades, Catherine saved Brett’s life seconds after the car his friend was driving hit a tree and was on fire. She managed to leave the scene without any journalists bothering her, but when she realized that the man she saved was a famous hockey player, she felt the need to hide from the public eye. When she was still in high school, the public had judged her harshly, and she had no wish to end up with busybodies talking about her again. Ever. Until […]

Review: Swear on This Life – Renee Carlino

Review: Swear on This Life – Renee Carlino

Swear on This Life is one of those books, you know the ones… Emotional, strong, realistic, but kind of not. Very meta, with characters that draw you in and won’t let go. Beautifully written and well executed, too! Swear on This Life is the story of a woman who reads a book about a woman reading a book about a woman… That’s just a tiny part of what happens here, though, but I loved the way it was meta of meta in more than one way. The premise is very original, and I found it to be a fantastic way to do a second chance at love romance. There is a lot of heart-ache, and Emiline has a lot of […]

Review: It Ends With Us – Colleen Hoover

Review: It Ends With Us – Colleen Hoover

Yeah. It most definitely should end with them. It Ends with Us is a bit different from CoHo’s other stories with more mature characters. There are quite a few things that are similar too, though: the amazing writing, the character-driven story, and my tears… It Ends With Us is a very strong and necessary story. It deals with some pretty heavy subject matters, and I have actually already used it as an example of something important with a young woman I know… Lily Bloom is a very strong woman, and she has built so many walls around herself and her heart that she might have been completely impenetrable, but she wasn’t. The story itself starts with some chance encounters, and […]
