It had always been her…

Ten years had passed since the doors slammed shut behind Decker Calhoun, taking away his freedom, but more importantly, locking him away from Elizabeth Waters, the only woman he’d ever loved—the woman he’d given up everything for.

The day he was sentenced, he’d looked at her and said, No regrets, Lizzie. But he lied, because he did have one. Although he’s been out of jail for three years now, he was a year too late. Lizzie never knew how he felt and just months before he was released, she found somebody else and it’s too late.

Or maybe not. It seems that Lizzie’s boyfriend wants an open relationship and two can play at that game. Now all Decker has to do is convince Lizzie that he’s the better man…and has been all along.

You Own Me has all the anguish and love from a distance I love in a contemporary romance novel, where the protagonists haven’t ever admitted to each other how they feel about each other.

My You Own Me review:

Lizzie and Decker are best friends, they have been for a long time, even during the time Decker spent in jail. You Own Me shows how deep Lizzie and Decker’s feelings towards each other are, no matter that Lizzie has a boyfriend she’s been with for the past three years. Little by little, I learned that Lizzie’s boyfriend was a true asshat! Trying to get her to change so she would fit better against the image he had of an ideal woman – which just made me question why in the world he started dating her in the first place!

You Own Me continues with Lizzie setting up and account at an internet dating / playing site, after her boyfriend told her he wanted to have an ‘open’ relationship, and she found out he was registered there. Apparently, Mr. Asshat hadn’t considered that Lizzie just might make a go for the ‘open’ part, especially when he understood that Lizzie was actually very popular there.

Good thing that Lizzie has good friends in Decker and Selah, because she really needs help to keep her self-esteem up where it should be – she’s a gorgeous, curvy woman, the boss of her own coffee-shop, she’s also very funny, warm and a good friend. You Own Me started out with a lot of anguish, because Lizzie and Decker didn’t dare to admit their strong feelings for each other. There is a lot of teasing, sensory sweetness, and very hot love-scenes that follow some online flirting.

The writing in You Own Me appealed to me both because of the dual point of view, and because it’s in past tense, third person point of view. I felt like I was drawn into the story within the first few lines, and I just wanted to know why Decker and Lizzie had been ‘only’ friends for all this time. If you’re looking for a contemporary romance with some hotness and a little darkness, You Own Me will be the right book for you.

Some of my favorite You Own Me quotes:

[…]she’d spent the past few years trying to slim down a little. Slim down, from a size eighteen to something more… healthy, as Noel had called it. And appealing. You’re beautiful, but you’d be so much more appealing if you lost some weight.

It took her a moment to answer, because it was… unsettling. Yes, that was it. It was unsettling to have Decker’s long, heavy body so close to hers. He was hot – the heat of his body seemed to pulse against her skin in waves.

Maybe he could cut open his hand. If he lost enough blood, it would do something to deaden the hard-on, he thought. Adequate blood supply was needed to maintain erections, right?

    • It’s an intense story, Brandi. I really enjoyed reading it, and Izzy is certainly very easy to like 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by.

  1. OMG, talk about angst!!! Hmm, never encountered a character that subscribed at an online dating service before so that sounds original (to me.) Dual POVs can be really likeable and this sounds just like it.

That last quote: hahahahah, LOL! You’re a queen at finding fun quotes, Lex!

    • Yup, quite a lot of angst. And the dating service is funny, and very different form those I’ve heard about before. I love highlighting quotes on my kindle, yet another reason why I am unable to read paperbacks anymore…

      Thanks for stopping by, Lola.

    • Yup, Charlotte, Mr. Asshat definitely ndeds a woman who can stomp on his ego a little bit… I can’t spoil anything for you, so I won’t answer that question, my dear 😛

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. *sigh* You Own Me sounds like it held up to why I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Walker’s books. The quotes you picked do a great job at showcasing your summary, Lex…angsty, steamy, funny… I do like a story where the characters refuse to admit their feelings. I’ll have to one-click this one. 😉

I hope your week is going well. How long are the boys gone? I’m sure it’s different/quiet around there. And I don’t like to think about getting used to having fewer kids at home. 😉 We’re getting ready for our trip east – we leave Saturday – so it’s been a busy week so far. Enjoy the rest of your day, my dear!! **BIG HUGS**

    • Yeah, Ms. Walker knows how to deliver a great story, Brandee! I hope you’ll enjoy I Own You as much as I did 🙂

My week is pretty good so far. The boys will be coming home on Friday evening, and then the youngest one is leaving again on Sunday until the Saturday after that… I hope you’ll have fun road-tripping and searching for the perfect Uni, Brandee. Thanks for stopping by 🙂 *BIG HUGS*

    • Yes, and they are awesome, too! This one was hot, too, Braine, and I love the friend-to-lovers trope for some reason 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by.

    • Walker / Daniels is awesome! I love the way her writing just grabs my attention and keeps it for the whole story 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by.
