Adult - (un)Conventional Bookviews

It’d been awhile since I visited the Immortals After Dark series and I’m so happy I kicked off my 2020 audio year with Kiss of a Demon King. While Kiss of a Demon King wasn’t as action-packed as other installments, I did enjoy seeing Rydstrom find and fight for his fated female. And Sabine was an absolute delight! Much of their repartee was quite comedic. Visiting with others from the Lore was a bonus.

Highlights:

  • Characters
Rydstrom has spent centuries waiting for his fated one as well as the return of his kingdom. He’s know for being steady and good, so being straddled with Sabine as his female understandably gives him pause. Sabine is the Queen of Illusions, a sorceri allied with Rydstrom’s arch-nemesis, Omort. She’s know for a long while hat Rydstrom was her fated one and has plotted and waited until the time was right to use that status to her advantage. What I liked most about Rydstrom and Sabine is the character growth they undergo while their unlikely romance develops. They each have preconceived notions about the other as well as themselves and it was fascinating to watch those change and their defenses crumble.
  • Plot
While the result of the plot was a bit anti-climatic, the journey was entertaining and, at times, enlightening. Both Sabine and Rydstrom employ subterfuge as well as charm in their plotting and it was smile-inducing that their separate plotting ended with each having the same goal.
  • Narration!
Robert Petkoff is a master! He brings this enormous cast of characters to life with aplomb. His ability to embody them all, from a simpering female to an enraged Rage demon, is unmatched in my experience. Obviously, I adore him. 🙂
