STS #125 – Bought Borrowed & Bagged #75

Stacking The Shelves, hosted by Tynga’s Reviews is all about the latest additions to your library – virtual or actual, with books that are  bought, borrowed, won or ARCs  you will be reading soon. Bought Borrowed and Bagged is a homage to to Barron’s Books and Baubles from KMM’ Fever series, and is hosted by Braine over at Talk Supe. After only adding a single book for last week’s Bought Borrowed and Bagged, it seems I went a little overboard this week. To my defence, several of my ARCs were requested quite a long time ago… Without further ado, here’s what I bought, borrowed or bagged this past week:

Ancient & Epic Tales cover - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Ancient & Epic Tales by Heather Forest was Read Now and labeled for educators on Netgalley. I can’t wait to dig in, and also see if there are some nice stories I can use for my teaching.

Heather Forest’s artful prose and keen curatorial selection brings an array of ancient tales of adventure, quest and heroics to life for modern readers. This multicultural anthology presents pivotal episodes from epic tales such as Gilgamesh, Beowulf, the Odyssey, the Ramayana, and more. The collection illuminates large-scale narratives that were passed on and preserved through the oral tradition long before being captured in written form by early scribes. With the publication of Epic and Ancient Tales, Heather completes her long awaited trilogy of Tales From Around the World including Wonder Tales and Wisdom Tales. These epic narratives remain relevant today as they provide insights into the complexity of human relationships and the intimate, personal journey of anyone seeking to understand the meaning of life. This collection of timeless stories includes Norse legends, Greek myths, Japanese folktales, Persian stories, Irish Ballads and Chinese lore. Offering a global overview, this anthology of concise retellings also provides endnotes with cultural and historical background to inspire readers further inquiry into these enduring tales.”

Discovering You cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsDiscovering You (Whiskey Creek #10) by Brenda Novak

Can she ever trust another “bad boy”?
India Sommers once had the perfect family—until an ex-boyfriend broke in and shot her husband. Not only did that cost her the man she loved, a respected heart surgeon and the father of her child, but she also feels responsible. Charlie died because of the people she hung out with before she had the strength to change her life.

Just after moving to Whiskey Creek with her little girl, Cassia, to start over, she’s learned that her ex-boyfriend’s trial ended in a hung jury. He’s getting out of jail; he could try to find her again. And that’s not all that scares her. She’s extremely attracted to her next-door neighbor, but Rod Amos is the handsome “bad boy” type that’s given her so much trouble in the past. If she got involved with him, her in-laws would sue for custody of Cassia.
India has to keep her distance from Rod—but the more she gets to know him, the more difficult that becomes.

Growing and Kissing cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsGrowing and Kissing by Helena Newbury

When my sister is diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, there’s only one way to raise the half a million dollars I need to save her: use my skills with plants to grow marijuana. But I’m a botany geek, not a drug lord. I need help. I need the scariest guy on the block: Sean O’Harra, the muscled, sledge hammer-wielding badass even the dealers fear. He says that he destroys everything he touches…so why can’t I stop thinking about his big hands all over my body? As the summer heat rises, I’ll have to juggle my normal life and my new life as a criminal while cops, dealers and gangs threaten us on all sides…but the hardest thing of all might be keeping Sean and me apart. I’m a good girl…but I think he’s about to turn me really, really bad.

The Woman in Cabin 10 cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsThe Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware – received from Gallery books via Edelweiss

In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…
With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10—one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.

I finally heard back from some requests I made a long time ago on Edelweiss, and got the following titles from them:

Away We Go cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsAway We Go by Emil Ostrovski

Westing is not your typical school. For starters, you have to have one very important quality in order to be admitted—you have to be dying. Every student at Westing has been diagnosed with PPV, or the Peter Pan Virus. No one is expected to live to graduation.
What do you do when you go to a school where no one has a future? Noah Falls, his girlfriend Alice, and his best friend Marty spend their time drinking, making out, and playing video games on awaywego.com. But when an older boy named Zach (who Noah may or may not be in love with) invites Noah and Marty to join his secret Polo Club, the lives of both boys change as they struggle to find meaning in their shortened existence.
With an innovative format that includes interstitial documents, such as flyers, postcards, and handwritten notes, Away We Go is a funny, honest look at first love and tragic heartbreak.

As she and Cedric bond, they’ll discover that she’s more connected to his world than they ever could’ve imagined…and that finding home is no easy task…

The Hunt cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsThe Hunt by Megan Shepherd

They’ve left the cage—but they’re not free yet.
After their failed escape attempt, Cora, Lucky, and Mali have been demoted to the lowest level of human captives and placed in a safari-themed environment called the Hunt, along with wild animals and other human outcasts. They must serve new Kindred masters—Cora as a lounge singer, Lucky as an animal wrangler, and Mali as a safari guide—and follow new rules or face dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, Nok and Rolf have been moved into an enormous dollhouse, observed around the clock by Kindred scientists interested in Nok’s pregnancy. And Leon, the only one who successfully escaped, has teamed up with villainous Mosca black-market traders.
The former inhabitants of the Cage are threatened on all fronts—and maybe worst of all, one of the Hunt’s Kindred safari guests begins to play a twisted game of cat and mouse with Cora. Separated and constantly under watch, she and the others must struggle to stay alive, never mind find a way back to each other. When Cassian secretly offers to train Cora to develop her psychic abilities—to prove the worthiness of humanity in a series of tests called the Gauntlet—she’ll have to decide fast if she dares to trust the Kindred who betrayed her, or if she can forge her own way to freedom.

The Outliers cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsThe Outliers by Kimberly McCreight

It all starts with a text: Please, Wylie, I need your help. Wylie hasn’t heard from Cassie in over a week, not since their last fight. But that doesn’t matter. Cassie’s in trouble, so Wylie decides to do what she has done so many times before: save her best friend from herself.
This time it’s different, though. Instead of telling Wylie where she is, Cassie sends cryptic clues. And instead of having Wylie come by herself, Jasper shows up saying Cassie sent him to help. Trusting the guy who sent Cassie off the rails doesn’t feel right, but Wylie has no choice but to ignore her gut instinct and go with him.
But figuring out where Cassie is goes from difficult to dangerous, fast. As Wylie and Jasper head farther and farther north into the dense woods of Maine, Wylie struggles to control her growing sense that something is really wrong. What isn’t Cassie telling them? And could finding her be only the beginning?

    • I love the bookbox because I could choose two genres (for the two monthly books) and the rest is a surprise, so it truly is like getting a gift 🙂

    • Mercy Thompson is a great series, Lekeisha, and I’m a little jealous because you’re about to experience her for the very first time 🙂 I have several series other bloggers love that I haven’t had a chance to start yet, so you’re definitely not alone 🙂

  3. Great haul! The book box looks like fun…and I have also requested The Outliers from Edelweiss…haven’t heard yet.

I have just joined up there, so I might not get anything for a while.

Enjoy! Thanks for sharing, and my post venue this week is at Rainy Days and Mondays: MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  4. Wow, that is what I call a great haul! And that bookbox made me very curious. Any link where I can see how that works? I don´t have a STS myself this week unfortunately, ´cause I was busy trying to work out some serious problems I am facing with my blog at the moment and so I totally forgot to put my books together. Hopefully next week I can publish another STS again.

best wishes and happy reading to you

  5. I got Panther’s Claim on audio too. I thought about getting the Shelly Laurenston books, but I just read them last year and I didn’t want to revisit them again this soon. I’m a little disappointed the change in narrator. Johanna Parker normally does Shelly Laurenston books. I’m not sure why she isn’t doing this series. That might have been enough to tip me over the scales to pick this up. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on the narrator. I love that series.

  6. I’m thinking you kinda made up for the single book last week! 😉 Nice haul, my friend. They all look really good. I got Discovering You too! And, of course, we got a few other books in common. 😉 I’ll make sure to post my BB&B this week. I’ve been a slacker lately with it. :/
Hope you’re having a great week!! **BIG HUGS**
