Sidekick Showcase - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, and so will Jaclyn, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on Jaclyn’s page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week’s topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their’s throughout the week as well

Sidekick Showcase #25 – Candyhouse Witch

Today, the chosen sidekick has to be a fairytale character. When Jaclyn first said she wanted to do this, I was very enthusiastic about it, but it has taken me quite some time to come up with someone I wanted for my sidekick today. First of all, it’s a language thing, my mother tongue is Norwegian, and I live in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. So I can’t say I’ve read a lot of fairytales in English. Now, I need at least the character name and the title in English, right? So that you guys know who I’m talking about 🙂

So because Halloween was just this past Thursday, I went with the witch in Hansel and Gretel. She really scared me when I was a child, because she’s the right mixture of mean and stupid. Of course, I was very happy in the end when Gretel was a lot smarter and managed to get the better of the witch and save Hansel at the same time. She’s not on my list today because I ever loved her, but I did love to hate her!

I don’t have any quotes as I only own fairytales in Norwegian (and a few in French) but I can point out a couple of scenes I really enjoyed. First, when Hansel and Gretel find her house, and they are so hungry, and they just want to eat a little bit of the shutters and the witch comes out. At that time, she pretends to be nice, and invites them in. But soon, she puts Hansel in a cage and Gretel is used as a housekeeper.

I loved it when she decided Hansel was fat enough to be cooked, and then Gretel tricked her and got her into the oven instead. In the good old fairytales, the good always conquer the bad, and there is always a moral to the story. I think that is one of the reasons why I love the TV show Once Upon a Time, even if I’m very far behind watching it.

Who did you choose today? Please link up so I can check it out 🙂

Thanks for stopping by today! Have a peaceful Sunday.

  1. I glossed over this story when I was little because it was too scary to think a nice old lady who invited you into her home would then try to eat you! I was the little girl who wandered the neighborhood and went inside any house that opened their door. Pretty sure I wouldn’t be as crafty as Gretel. Great pick, Lexxie. Have a great week!

  2. LOL Fantastic choice, Lexxie! Hansel and Gretel is a fairytale I haven’t read in quite awhile. The funny thing is, I don’t think I was all that scared of the witch! LOL Hmm, what does that say?!?

So, exactly how many languages do you speak, Lexxie??? I think it’d be neat to read a fairytale in a different language just to see how things translate.

Hope your week is off to a great start! *hugs*

  3. I was so amazed by Gretel because she outwitted the witch like that, so I’m not sure I was too scared of her either.

I speak Norwegian, French and English fluently, I get by in Spanish and can order food (and wine!) in Italian.

My week is off to a great start, I hope yours is too, Brandee! *hugs*
