Sidekick Showcase - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, and so will Jaclyn, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on Jaclyn’s page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week’s topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their’s throughout the week as well

Sidekick Showcase #14 – One Third of a Love Triangle

Oh my… I am one of those readers who don’t appreciate a love triangle. It has been very seldom that a book had a love triangle that I felt actually made a little bit of sense! Mostly, because I think an actual love triangle won’t last very long – one of the participants is going to get mad about being left out in the cold and move on. And I don’t believe it’s possible to have more than one soul-mate…

I do have one where I think the triangle wasn’t bad, though, and that’s in the Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand. Clara is a cute and thoughtful girl, and she feels attracted to both Christian and Tucker. And I think the humor used is why I actually liked this triangle, and also because I really enjoyed all of Clara’s adventures. When Clara realized she was in love with two boys who both seemed as if they liked her back, she said: “Before I moved here, I never got the whole love-triangle thing. You know, in movies or romance novels or whatnot, where there’s one chick that all the guys are drooling over, even though you can’t see anything particularly special about her. But oh, no, they both must have her. And she’s like, oh dear, however will I choose? William is so sensitive, he understands me, he swept me off my feet, oh misery, blubber, blubber, but how can I go on living without Rafe and his devil-may-care ways and his dark and only-a-little-abusive love? Upchuck.

And the one third of the love triangle I really want to highlight today is Tucker! The farm-boy who knows how to ride a horse, who has a pure heart, and who loves with all he’s got. Here are some quotes to show you what I mean :

From Boundless:

“I should have fought for you, Clara, even if I would have had to fight you to fight for you. I should have never let you go.”

“It doesn’t taste anything like the drink I had at the party with Tucker. And now, almost two years later, I realize why. Tucker never put any rum in my rum and Coke.
That little stink.
That overly protective, impossible, infuriating, and utterly sweet little stink.
In that moment I miss him so much my stomach hurts.”

From Unearthly:

“Tucker: “But she gave me the perfect gift.”
Clara: “What?”
Tucker: “You.”

“Tucker,” I say. “I’m so glad you’re still here.”
I throw myself into his arms. He hugs me tightly.
“I couldn’t leave,” he says.
“I know.”
“I mean, literally. I don’t have a ride.”

“Tucker: “Today we ran into a mama grizzly with two cubs at the ridge off Colter Bay and Clara sang to it to make it go away.”
Mrs. Avery: You sang to it?
Tucker: Her singing is that bad.”

From Hallowed :

“Hi there,” Tucker says brightly, like we’re bumping into each other on the street.
“Uh, hi.”
“Nice night for stalking,” he observes.
“No, I was—”
“Get your butt in here, Carrots.”

“This isn’t going to become one of those creepy situations where you show up at all hours of the night to watch me sleep, is it?” he asks playfully.”

“Your hair smells like wind, did you know that?”
Yep, me and Tucker, smelling each other.”

So who did you choose today? What do you think about love triangles? I can’t wait to find out 🙂

Thanks for stopping by today, have a spectacular Saturday.

  1. There where few cases that I enjoyed a love triangle, especially when the one I’m rooting for is the one who gets the girl, aha 😀
I usually get frustrated if an author, out of the blue, just trow a love triangle in the mix! Like it’s following some formula, grr.

  2. Love triangles don’t usually bother me, Lexxie. But I think it’s because, like you said, there’s only one soul mate, so the extra ‘angle’ will eventually move on. And if it’s done well, I like the tension a love triangle brings to the story.

The Unearthly series is one of those series…you know the type I’m speaking of??? Yeah, the type that’s sitting on my shelf waiting to be read! LOL But reading those quotes from Tucker just moved this series ahead of others on my TBR! I particularly loved the quotes from Hallowed. And I love the humor that is so evident! Great pick, Lexxie!

  3. I don’t even have my love triangle selected yet! I enjoy added tension, but not from waffling. If there’s another character vying for the MC’s heart that could be entertaining, but if the MC goes back and forth for six books I get cranky. But I have to admit to not knowing about the whole one soul mate thing. Great quotes. Tucker sounds cool. I like that he didn’t put any rum in her rum and cokes. Hope you’re having a great weekend, Lexxie!

  4. I’m with Robyn on loving that Tucker didn’t put any Rum in her drink. That is hilarious!! I haven’t read this series yet, but I really want to. It’s been on my to-read list for quite some time and I will eventually get to it. Yes, you’ve definitely made me want to get to it a little quicker. Thank you so much for sharing about Tucker. I agree with you on love triangles – I want them used sparingly and to make sense. Have a wonderful weekend! Jaclyn @ JC’s Book Haven.

  5. I don’t like love triangles either… but it’s not because I think there should be only one “soul mate,” it’s just that they usually don’t strike me as natural. They’re too overdone so now it’s even harder to make them done well, even though in real life I’d say most people have probably been part of a love triangle at one time or another (even if we didn’t know it).

I hate it when love triangles are forced and there really is only one option. Did anyone really think Bella would pick Jacob or that mental chick from Shatter Me would pick Adam.

I honestly like the love triangle in The Hunger Games because Katniss has good reasons to be with each guy and was emotionally torn.

  7. Christian Clara Tucker is such a great triangle. I have two reasons for liking it: Christian being totally understanding about it (in the end anyway) and the fact that Clara and Christian’s natures allow for their relationship to be postponed until later (perhaps).
