Kateri is a geologist, and I have a feeling we have met her somewhere before, but I'm not completely sure about that. She remembers all the mythology stories her grammy told her when she was younger, but being a scientist, she really doesn't believe in any of it... or does she? This is where the readers really need to be able to suspend disbelief, just as much as Kateri has to try to understand that there is more to the world than what science can explain, the readers also have to try to get that Kateri has no problems whatsover believing certain things she grew up hearing about from her grammy.

Time Untime – book 22 in one of my favorite series was quite different from the rest of the books in some ways, and very similar in others. The biggest difference for me was that I didn’t really love Ren all that much 🙁 I get that his extremely long life has been difficult, and that he has never known love, but the self-loathing was really hard to read about, and made it less enjoyable to read than I would have liked.  I totally loved Kateri, though, and both Ash and Nick showed up to save the day, and I love both of them as well, so there were lots of things to like in this instalment, even if there were some things I didn’t like too.

Kateri is a geologist, and I have a feeling we have met her somewhere before, but I’m not completely sure about that. She remembers all the mythology stories her grammy told her when she was younger, but being a scientist, she really doesn’t believe in any of it… or does she? This is where the readers really need to be able to suspend disbelief, just as much as Kateri has to try to understand that there is more to the world than what science can explain, the readers also have to try to get that Kateri has no problems whatsover believing certain things she grew up hearing about from her grammy.

The whole story spans over just a couple of days, which is partly why I had trouble with Ren and Kateri loving each other so deeply they would die for each other in various fights against Demons, Coyote, Cabeza and the things who had started to spill out through the fractured gates. It was also a little hard to believe that Kateri didn’t freak out at all when she was told what was happening, and that her destiny was critical to saving all mankind. Her analytical mind didn’t even cringe much at all the supernatural things that happened around her and to her. What human being could survive having a being of some kind show up at her office, ‘freeze’ her assistant, then try to bring her to another plane? Then, when she is brought to another plane where Ren finds her and saves her, not only does she deal with that OK, but she remembers how her grammy has always warned her about this one being, and she realizes that is Ren. And in her dreams, he always ends up killing her. At the same time, Ren has dreams of Kateri killing him as well. They still end up trusting each other in a second, not listening to their instincts. It seems like at least Ren who is so old, would rather listen to his instincts than his heart. Especially because he had been treated badly by every single person or demon he ever encountered in his life – apart from Ash and Sundance – even his family had always hated him because of how he was conceived.

The story was quite fractured because it went back and forth between Kateri and her dreams and visions on one hand, and Ren’s very long life on the other. Also, minor characters from other books in the series were inserted in very many places and I can easily understand that this was confusing for some readers. Coyote had only been mentioned in passing in other books, as one of the really bad evil immortals, one who only lived for revenge. To find out a little more about him was good, but I am not completely sure it added something to the story in this book, however it did add to the overall story arch of the series.

It was just wonderful to see Nick and Ash both being there again, and interacting almost like they did in the beginning of the Dark Hunter series. This proves that all might not be lost for Nick, even if it seemed that way in Infamous (Chronicles of Nick #3). The fact that he even did something very special for Ren at the very end proves this as well, even if what he was able to do was not supposed to happen anymore…

I will take this as a kind of filler book, but I cannot give it as many stars as the other books in the series, first of all because of the insta-love between Ren and Kateri, it has been done a lot better in other books in the series, where the main characters were able to get to know each other a little bit more (or they already knew each other) before they were all lovey-dovey. If you love the Dark Hunter series, I think you would enjoy this book as well, even if I think it is less good than the prior installments.

  1. I'm so late in this series, I read the French translations for now and we're at the 12th books, so yeah a lot more to read. Ah insta-love is terrible! thanks for the review…

  2. Are the French translations OK?This is still among my favorite series, and I look forward to seeing what you think about it and the other books as well.

  3. I think it's OK, they are old, they just restart to release the series now. But as I didn't try them in ENglish I don't really know the different. Little by little I stop reading in French. It's just it's not very beautifil to have the start in French and the rest in another language lol. Can't wait to read more.

  4. I can understand starting a series in one language, and then continuing in another being a bit strange. Now that I have a kindle, I almost only buy my books through amazon – it's cheaper, and I get instant gratification 🙂

  5. It's an easier way I confess. At the end if I love an ebook I buy the book. I always need a real book so I read an ebook and a book at the same time.

  6. Oh yes, seventeen books! And most of them are truly solid 4 or 5 stars. I love this series, which is probably also why I always have high expectations now 🙂
