STS #49 – BB&B #1
Stacking The Shelves, hosted by Tynga’s Reviews is all about the latest additions to your library – virtual or actual, with books that are bought, borrowed, won or ARCs you will be reading soon. BB&B is a homage to to Barron’s Books and Baubles from Karen Marie Moning’s amazing Fever series, and is hosted by Braine over at Talk Supe.
This past week, I got my exam results back. And I am very happy to be able to say that I have my Bachelors degree in English language and literature, and General linguistics. To celebrate my degree, I went quite click-happy this week. But I decided that I deserve it 🙂
Edelweiss ARCs:
White Gardenia – Belinda Alexandra
In a district of the city of Harbin, a haven for White Russian families since Russia’s Communist Revolution, Alina Kozlova must make a heartbreaking decision if her only child, Anya, is to survive the final days of World War II.
White Gardenia sweeps across cultures and continents, from the glamorous nightclubs of Shanghai to the austerity of Cold War Soviet Russia in the 1960s, from a desolate island in the Pacific Ocean to a new life in post-war Australia. Both mother and daughter must make sacrifices, but is the price too high? Most importantly of all, will they ever find each other again?
Rich in historical detail and reminiscent of stories by Kate Morton and Lucinda Riley, White Gardenia is a compelling and beautifully written tale about yearning, longing, and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

Oryx and Crake (MaddAddam Trilogy #1) – Margaret Atwood
Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey–with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake–through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.
The Year of the Flood (MaddAddam Trilogy #2) – Margaret Atwood
The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God’s Gardeners–a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life–has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life. Two women have survived: Ren, a young trapeze dancer locked inside the high-end sex club Scales and Tails, and Toby, a God’s Gardener barricaded inside a luxurious spa where many of the treatments are edible.
Have others survived? Ren’s bioartist friend Amanda? Zeb, her eco-fighter stepfather? Her onetime lover, Jimmy? Or the murderous Painballers, survivors of the mutual-elimination Painball prison? Not to mention the shadowy, corrupt policing force of the ruling powers . . .
Meanwhile, gene-spliced life forms are proliferating: the lion/lamb blends, the Mo’hair sheep with human hair, the pigs with human brain tissue. As Adam One and his intrepid hemp-clad band make their way through this strange new world, Ren and Toby will have to decide on their next move. They can’t stay locked away . . .
MaddAddam (MaddAddam Trilogy #3) – Margaret Atwood
A man-made plague has swept the earth, but a small group survives, along with the green-eyed Crakers – a gentle species bio-engineered to replace humans. Toby, onetime member of the Gods Gardeners and expert in mushrooms and bees, is still in love with street-smart Zeb, who has an interesting past. The Crakers’ reluctant prophet, Snowman-the-Jimmy, is hallucinating; Amanda is in shock from a Painballer attack; and Ivory Bill yearns for the provocative Swift Fox, who is flirting with Zeb. Meanwhile, giant Pigoons and malevolent Painballers threaten to attack.
Told with wit, dizzying imagination, and dark humour, Booker Prize-winning Margaret Atwood’s unpredictable, chilling and hilarious MaddAddam takes us further into a challenging dystopian world and holds up a skewed mirror to our own possible future.
Kindle Freebies:
Slash and Burn volume 1 – Alice Bello I added this one thanks to Braine’s wonderful review.
My name is Liz Hamilton. My career and sex life are circling the drain. My art gallery is about to become a laughing stock, and I can’t get past the heavy petting stage with a man without turning into a cold fish.
The problem? I watched my best friend give birth three months ago and lost my sex drive… oh, and I have paintings of zombie turkeys on the walls of my gallery.
Then Jackson Burk, the man who rejected my virginity back in college, appears to screw things up for me even more.
The solution?
Hell if I know…
*Due to strong language and sexual situations, this series is not intended for readers under the age of 18.*

I never thought Margaret Atwood wrote stories like that, I’ll have to take a closer look. You taught me something today, thanks ! I see you caught Social media #2 too 😉 Enjoy that great book haul !
It’s actually one of my English professors who told me about Atwood’s dystopia series, Red Iza, because she asked me what I enjoyed reading outside of classes and I said I really enjoyed contemporary authors writing dystopia 🙂
Social Media #2 was good.
Thanks for stopping by.
‘Like’ certainly has featured a lot recently. Still one I need to get.
Oh,and that cover for Slash and Burn… so hot.
Hope you enjoy reading all your books, Lexxie. Have a great weekend 🙂

I really look forward to the Atwood novels, especially because I’ll be able to read them just for me, but they are part of one of the Bachelor classes in my department next year.
Yeah, JA Huss is awesome, and what’s not to like about that cover, right?
Thanks for stopping by, Stormi 🙂
Nice haul this week! I’m definitely interested in J.A. Huss’ new series. I bought the first book when it came out, but I’ve not read it yet. I should get on that…
Have a great week!
My StS!
Yeah, if I hadn’t started reading the first one once it came out, I’d have probably waited for all of them to be released before I started reading any at all 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, Kim 🙂
Great Haul! 🙂 Some of the books were really interesting 😉 I hope you enjoy them!

Thanks Jessica 🙂 Have a great day yourself.
Very nice haul. A lot of these books look like you will be in store for some sexy reading indeed.
Grace @ Books of Love
Yup, and we both know how much I love sexy reads 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, Grace!
Nice haul! I wish I was more of a fan of Margaret Atwood — I’ve read a few of her books, and I sort of like them, but when she wrote in a genre you’d think I’d be most interested in… nope. I don’t think I ever finished Oryx and Crake. People do say such good things about it, though. Enjoy, and have a good week!
Uh Oh… I hope I’ll enjoy the whole MaddAddam trilogy, since I splurged and just bought all three of them in one go. If I enjoy the first book, I’ll be very happy to have the next two already on my kindle.
Thanks for stopping by Nikki.
Congratulations on your degree, Lexxie :D! That achievement definitely warrants some new books ;).
Thank you Jirrine! I’m very happy with my degree, and really, any achievement or worry warrants some new books 😉
Thanks for stopping by.
