Sidekick Showcase - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Sunday,  while Jaclyn posts her on Saturday, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on Jaclyn’s page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week’s topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their’s throughout the week as well

Sidekick Showcase #35 – Book Boyfriend

For the whole month of February, we are allowed to share our book boyfriends, romantic sidekicks, or a sidekick showcase of someone who is just plain hot. How awesome is that?

My first choice for a book boyfriend has to be Ford Aston from the Rook and Ronin series by J.A. Huss. He has his own spin-off books now, but I fell for him in Manic, and my feelings were cemented in Panic. Ford is very complex, and at first, he acted like a first class ass-hole! However, I just thought there was much more to him than that, and his bluntness and the way he would make sure Rook was comfortable even while standing naked being body-painted for a photo-shoot just made him awesome. Can you imagine he actually bought some books for his kindle and read them out loud to help Rook think of something else? How amazing is that?

From Manic:

“Because Spencer is a certifiable genius, Ford is as ruthless as they come, and I’m an accomplished liar.”

“Where’s Spencer?” I ask after looking around. “And everyone else?” It’s just me, Ronin, and this asshole named after a truck.

“You,” he answers softly. “I’m not trying to fix you, I’m just trying to give you the tools to fix yourself.”

From Panic:

“If you touch me I’ll touch you back. I’ll cup your face and kiss your mouth. I’ll hold you close and make you choose me.” I stop and swallow hard and then lean into her space and whisper, “I’ll ruin everything if you touch me. I’ll ruin us. I’ll ruin this. I’ll ruin you, just like you said. I’ll ruin you and I’ll ruin your life. And I love you too much to ruin you. So I’m leaving.”

“Well it’s not really a mystery. It was the day I met you, that’s when. You’ve changed me, Rook. You make me weak, you make me stumble, you make me fall, and even though I know you’ll pick me up if I ask you to, it’s not enough. I want you to make me stronger, just like I made you. I want it all or I want nothing. And since I can’t have it all, I’ll take nothing.”

“So I do what I have to do. I make it worse. So she’s left with no more doubts about what kind of man I am. So she will release her hold on me. So she will stop looking at me like she cares. So I can let go and move on. I turn away. I walk out. And I never look back.”

“Like this, Rook.” Ford’s soft words vibrate into me. “I like you. I’d like to show you how much, actually. I’m being a gentleman to make life easier for you, but believe me, it’s not really in my nature to be so accommodating. I typically just take what I want.”

Yeah, so I had to include Ford. Both of his own stories, Slack and Taut are made of awesome as well! And if you haven’t read these yet, what are you waiting for?

Thanks for stopping by today, don’t forget to leave your link so I can check out your romantic sidekick as well 🙂 Have a spectacular Saturday.

  1. He sounds cool. I think if I had a book boyfriend it would have to be either Barrons or Bones…lol. They are sexxxxxyyyyy! 🙂 The only two guys who has ever stood out for me in a book so that I remember them anyway..lol. 🙂

    • Oh both Barrons and Bones are my book boyfriends, too, Stormi *grins* I’m greedy! But I wouldn’t say they are side characters exactly, apart from maybe in the first book.

I agree that they are both very sexxxyyy 😉 Thanks for stopping by!

    • This series is probably not for you, yet, Melanie. It’s NA and it is pretty steamy at times 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I loved Ford the most I think in the Rook and Ronin series, but I haven’t read Panic yet…I will be reading it during the March COYER challenge for sure. And then I’ll just have to move right into his books. I loved that he loaded his Kindle with books for Rook even though he was scheming. It was good scheming. I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, Lexxie!!

    • I can’t wait to see what you think of Panic, Robyn 🙂 I know, loading his kindle with books for Rook really showed another side to him – and he might not have even realized it himself 😀

Thanks for stopping by, enjoy your Sunday.

  3. *ha* I ALMOST went with Ford this week, Lexxie! The only reason I didn’t is because I’ve used Ford for a sidekick before. But you do realize that I found him first, right?? And according to Robyn, I’m a book boyfriend monger, so… LOL Ford is completely swoon-y. You know I love him and all his complexities and peculiarities and yeah…he IS just made of awesome! *cough-he’s mine-cough* Oh, alright…I’ll share him. After all, you’ve shared some pretty swoon-y book boyfriends with me. And what are friends for?!?

I hope you had a fantastic weekend, my friend! I’m PM’ing you some questions that I’ve been meaning to ask. And I’ll ‘see’ you tomorrow! *BIG HUGS*

    • LOL; yes, I do know you found Ford first, Brandee, but I knew you wouldn’t mind sharing him with me *grins* and that IS partly what friends are for, right? Share those fictional men with other fans…

I did have a good weekend, and now I’m really curious about your quesitons… *runs to e-mail, FB pms and more*

I hope your weekend was great, too. See you tomorrow. *BIG HUGS*

  4. Oh wow! I read all the reviews for the Rook and Ronin series and remember everyone disliking him and first and changing their opinion, but I had no idea that there’s a spinoff of him now! I actually love those characters that have you gritting your teeth with dislike and then you somehow fall in love with them down the line. Definitely shows the talent of the author to change your opinion like that. Thank you so much for sharing those quotes! I love them 😀 Jaclyn @ JC’s Book Haven.

    • I thought he was a douche in the beginning, but I still fell for him somehow, and I was comforted in those feelings as the series went on.
Ford’s own books are really great, Jaclyn – what are you waiting for?
      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

    • I have completely fallen in love with her Rook and Ronin series as well as the spin-offs I have read, Franny. Definitely worth it!

      Thanks for stopping by.

  5. This is a fun category. The character I would pick as my sidekick book boyfriend is Shane from Morganville Vampires. He has such a good heart for a guy with such a twisted upbringing.

If I were to really stretch the point, I might also nominate Nyrnin. Wait, lucid Nyrnin. Whacked out Myrnin is just, well, too much to handle.

    • Really, Xyra? You’d have Myrnin for your book boyfriend? Even lucid Myrnin is pretty scary 😀 But I do love him!
And of course I agree with you about Shane. He’s awesome.

      Thanks for stopping by!

      • I know it’s crazy, but there is something that tugs at my heart where Myrnin is concerned. Granted I’m not sure I could trust him as far as I could throw one of his bunny slippers, but the one book where we all thought he was dead…I was practically in tears.

There is no doubt that Shane is the better choice of the two. 😉
