Review: Their Fractured Light – Amy Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Review: Their Fractured Light – Amy Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Their Fractured Light definitely brings the Starbound story full circle. And it’s a story of true hope, hope for humankind, for love, and for faith. I think I really needed this kind of story right now, too. Where choices are important, and where making the right choice can be the most difficult situation of them all. My Their Fractured Light review: The whole Starbound series has had me completely starstruck! This dystopia set several hundred years in the future, and where some of the characters have had to make some very difficult choices brought many important issues to my mind. In Their Fractured Light, the main characters from the prior books were all present, as were Sofia and Gideon whom […]

Review: The One Thing – Marci Lyn Curtis

Review: The One Thing – Marci Lyn Curtis

The One Thing is one of the sweetest and most strangely heartbreaking stories I have ever read! My The One Thing review: As soon as I started reading The One Thing, I knew this story was different. And so it was, on every level, too. Maggie was a character I didn’t exactly loved at the beginning, but she sure did intrigue me from the start. What could a blind girl have done to actually have a probation officer? I quickly fell completely in love with Maggie though, both because of her sarcastic wit and because while she was kind of trying to wallow in her blindness, sad about not being able to play soccer anymore, she proved that she had […]

DNF Review: Hex Hall – Rachel Hawkins

DNF Review: Hex Hall – Rachel Hawkins

I had quite high hopes for Hex Hall before I started it. Several reviewers whom I am almost always agreeing with loved it, and it’s a genre I love, too. Alas, Hex Hall and I weren’t meant to be. My Hex Hall review: I almost stopped reading Hex Hall at 37% of my kindle edition. I found the story to be very slow, I wasn’t all that interested in Sophie, and I also thought a lot of things didn’t make much sense – mostly because they were glossed over, and even Sophie had no idea about how to navigate her world. Being a witch raised by a human for sixteen years can’t have made anything easy for Sophie, but I […]

Review: When – Victoria Laurie

Review: When – Victoria Laurie

When is the story about a girl who can see when people will die – the exact date of their death – but she doesn’t know what to do with the information, and suddenly she’s the main suspect in a murder investigation. My When review: The mystery with the serial killer is well done in When, and it was impossible for me to figure out who the killer was, and how it tied in with the fact that Maddie could see when people would die. Those dates, however, weren’t ever really explained, and Maddie didn’t figure out why she could see these dates, or what she was supposed to do about it. The writing is good, even if the voice […]

Review: This Shattered World – Amie Kaufmann and Meagan Spooner

Review: This Shattered World – Amie Kaufmann and Meagan Spooner

This Shattered World continues the Starbound adventure in a beautiful and fulfilling way! The characters, the worldbuilding and the story are all amazingly well done. My This Shattered World review: In This Shattered World, the readers are taken to another terraformed planet, one that doesn’t progress the way it’s supposed to, and where the army is needed to keep order and a fragile peace. There are rebels hiding in the swamps, and they are apt at coming and going without being noticed. The story starts out very strong, with the army captain Lee in the local bar with some of her soldiers. And she is kidnapped from right under their noses once she realizes that a guy who is checking […]

Review: This Night so Dark – Amie Kaufmann and Meagan Spooner

Review: This Night so Dark – Amie Kaufmann and Meagan Spooner

This Night so Dark is the perfect novella to help fans stay patient while waiting for This Shattered World. There is more Tarver, a little Lilac, and a lot of intrigue and mystery. My This Night so Dark review: Showing both a little of what happened with Tarver and Lilac after the ending of These Broken Stars, and also some of the events that lead up to their meeting was good. Seeing the way Tarver had moved up in the military, and the way he treated the soldiers under him, as well as his quick wit and fast assessment of difficult and potentially dangerous situations made me love him even more. And the way his nightmares woke Lilac, and the […]

Review: Dead Beautiful – Yvonne Woon

Review: Dead Beautiful – Yvonne Woon

*I received a free ARC of Dead Beautiful from Disney-Hyperion via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review* Dead Beautiful is a pretty predictable YA story, where not that many things happen, the mystery isn’t really mysterious, and the characters and the story never managed to truly draw me in. My Dead Beautiful review: Dead Beautiful didn’t really take off for me, the mystery wasn’t mysterious enough, Renée wasn’t engaging enough, and Dante wasn’t enigmatic enough. I didn’t feel invested in the characters, especially because Renée seemed to change completely from when she was home to when she arrived at her new and expensive boarding school. All of the YA tropes I can do without are a part of Dead […]

Review: The Ring and the Crown (The Ring and the Crown #1) – Melissa de la Cruz

Review: The Ring and the Crown (The Ring and the Crown #1) – Melissa de la Cruz

*I received a free ARC of The Ring and the Crown from Disney Hyperion via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review* The Ring and the Crown is a young adult fantasy story, which seems to aim toward a kind of modern fairy tale. While the story unfolds mostly in London in the 21st century, the world isn’t the way it is for real right now, there is magic, and a lot less technology because the mage wants to keep progress at bay to make sure people are still dependent on the magic. The Ring and the Crown is told from several different points of view, and the switching is not always very easy to follow. The actual story of […]

Review: These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) – Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

*I received a free ARC of These Broken Stars from Disney Hyperion via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review* These Broken Stars is a beautifully written young adult novel set in a more or less distant future, when space travel is quite common, and several planets are colonized, but there is still war and those who hold power want to hold on to that. Many things seem very different from the way we live now, but at the core, human beings are still the same, with their hopes and dreams. They still love and hate, fear and show courage. The differences are in the science and the way people can travel. Tarver is on the Icarus only because he […]
