Audio Review: Starflight – Melissa Landers

Starflight was a fast-paced and action filled space adventure with great characters and a fantastic storyline! Starflight was such an exciting, fast-paced space adventure I’m kicking myself for not listening to it sooner! The characters were all complex, and the overall storyline amazing. Fights, more than one climax, plus all the feels – I just fell completely for this one. The complexity of the storyline and the well fleshed out characters were the main reason I loved the story. I was amazed at how one of the characters started out as an antagonist – whom I detested! – and then, little by little, the character changed and became one of the protagonists and I cheered them on. The action is […]

Review: Morning Star – Pierce Brown

Review: Morning Star – Pierce Brown

Morning Star. It blew my mind. My brain is scrambled. My heart is broken. My breath is taken. Morning Star is dark, following several different characters, even if a lot of the narration is from Darrow’s perspective. There is treason, suspected treason, politics, war, torture… and there is still a sense of hope in places, where the characters are ready to continue the war if that means the future will be better for those who come after them. However, there are also characters who are ready to continue the war for their own gain, for greed, to make sure the Golds stay on top of the societal pyramid. The writing is beautiful, even when the subject matter is ugly. Brown […]

Review: Their Fractured Light – Amy Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Review: Their Fractured Light – Amy Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Their Fractured Light definitely brings the Starbound story full circle. And it’s a story of true hope, hope for humankind, for love, and for faith. I think I really needed this kind of story right now, too. Where choices are important, and where making the right choice can be the most difficult situation of them all. My Their Fractured Light review: The whole Starbound series has had me completely starstruck! This dystopia set several hundred years in the future, and where some of the characters have had to make some very difficult choices brought many important issues to my mind. In Their Fractured Light, the main characters from the prior books were all present, as were Sofia and Gideon whom […]

Blogtour Review: Omega – Lizzy Ford

Blogtour Review: Omega – Lizzy Ford

Omega is a tale including Gods from Greek mythology, as well as a girl who has trained her whole life for survival, without knowing why. My Omega review: I think that reading the prequels to this novel made me enjoy Omega even more, as I got to know the main characters in their previous life, and knew more about some of them than they did themselves. That being said, I am sure it’s possible to enjoy this story without the prequels, as the story is solid, with good introductions to the characters, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as a good dose of world-building that unfolded as Alessandra discovered the world outside of the monastery where she grew up. The […]

Review: Sideswiped – Kim Harrison

Review: Sideswiped – Kim Harrison

Sideswiped is the prequel novella to Harrison’s new series The Peri Reed Chronicles, and it sets the background for both the overall story and the characters. Mysterious and dealing prominently with time travel or time change, while also showing how agents are being trained in order to be able to work for a very secret government organization. My Sideswiped review: In Sideswiped, we first meet Silas, Allen and Summer, they’re just days away from graduation at the OPTI and Silas is feeling nostalgic about possibly not seeing Summer as much in the future once she starts having assignments as a drafter. It is evident from the start that even the professors teaching the future generation of agents are not always […]

Blogtour Review: Shades of Treason – Sandy Williams

Blogtour Review: Shades of Treason – Sandy Williams

Shades of Treason is a gritty, dark Science fiction / Fantasy novel with harsh tones and a definite thriller-like feeling as well. My Shades of Treason review: Political intrigue, betrayal, war. Shades of Treason is a fast-paced story where the two main characters, Ash and Rykus are like two planets, with all the other characters in orbit around them – reacting to their actions and trying to follow in their wake. The action happens both through discussions and thoughts as well as actual fights, hand-to-hand combat, scaling cliffs and shooting. Ash is strong, she’s not completely human, but called an anomaly. On top of that, she’s been given drugs to make her stronger, faster, and more cunning. Shades of Treason […]

Review: The Leveller – Julia Durango

Review: The Leveller – Julia Durango

The Leveller is a little bit like Matrix for YA, but different… People are playing online games by leaving their body in a recliner, while they are having fun (at least that’s the way it’s supposed to be!) in the virtual world. My The Leveller review: The Leveller started off strong with Nixy in the virtual world to collect a teen to get him back home and conscious to his mother. Getting to know her, the family dynamics as well as her two best friends Chang and Moose helped building the story from the start. The game MEEP seemed to be quite innocent and fun when Nixy first went in to catch someone, but when the CEO of the MEEP […]

Review: Undertow – Michael Buckley

Review: Undertow – Michael Buckley

Undertow is a story about differences, acceptance, xenophobia and how important it is to believe in what we think is right. My Undertow review: Undertow is like reading a fantasy fictional version of current affaires in the world right now! People afraid of everything that is ‘other’. Refugees being held between a wall and the sea, with only the beach to give them shelter. The Alpha arrived three years before the story starts, and this species usually lived under water, like many different species of what we’d call mermaids. They loathe being called mermaids, though, they are selkies, nix, and other names that not only look different, but who have different jobs to keep their universe going round. In the […]

Review: Material Girls – Elaine Dimopoulus

Review: Material Girls – Elaine Dimopoulus

Material Girls definitely has a very interesting concept, in this universe, kids as young as 13 are ‘tapped’ to become fashionistas instead of going to school, they are trend-setters, making sure the people spend their money so that the rich can always become richer. My Material Girls review: Chilling is definitely a word that comes easily to mind when envisioning the kind of society that is reality in Material Girls! Both Ivy and Marla thought they were living the dream, Ivy as a very popular singer, and Marla as a judge in the superior court at one of the big five fashion houses. Setting trends, and making others obsolete at the same time was a big part of their daily […]

Review: Cinder – Marissa Meyer

Review: Cinder – Marissa Meyer

Cinder was up for a slow start, but after a while, things were happening more quickly, and while I was able to guess pretty early on who exactly Cinder was, I was still amazed at the way the story unfolded. My Cinder review: Cinder is part cyborg, and her adoptive mother treats her as a servant, so much so that all the money Cinder earns is deposited into Adri’s account rather than Cinder’s. As a gifted mechanic, with a stall at the market, she meets Crown Prince Kai when he needs help to repair his android. Meeting Kai is like a dream to her, but she knows he would be disgusted if he knew she was a cyborg, so rather […]
