Review: Every Which Way but Dead (The Hollows #3) – Kim Harrison

Review: Every Which Way but Dead (The Hollows #3) – Kim Harrison

Every Which Way but Dead is an apt title for this book, because Rachel will do almost anything in order to make sure she’ll be alive when all is said and done. She has some very big players to go up against now, though, and she especially has to be very cunning in her dealings with her favorite demon, Al. My review of Every Which Way but Dead is spoiler free, but there might be spoilers from the first two books in it. Especially because the plot is moving forward pretty quickly, and I want to make sure I touch on all the things that were important to me while reading. So if you’re even later than me to The […]

Review: The Good, the Bad and the Undead (The Hollows #2) – Kim Harrison

Review: The Good, the Bad and the Undead (The Hollows #2) – Kim Harrison

The Good the Bad and the Undead starts in the middle of a run that doesn’t go exactly as planned, and it kind of sets the mood for the whole story. Rachel isn’t exactly a planner anyway, but the things she tries to plan do not happen accordingly. She meets Piscary for the the first time, and is amazed that this is the infamous vampire who rules Cincy along with Kalamack and some other shady men of the underground. While having dinner there, Glenn realizes he has an acquired taste for tomatoes, and the ensuing smuggling of ketchup and other things made of the fruit is hilarious. As several ley-line witches go missing or are killed, Rachel is certain Trent […]

Review: Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows #1) – Kim Harrison

Review: Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows #1) – Kim Harrison

Dead Witch Walking has been on my kindle for a very long time! I went to check, and I actually bought it in September 2010, so yeah, Rachel Morgan and her friends have been very patient waiting for me to really notice them. Lately, three of my very good blogging friends have been talking about The Hollows series and telling me how good it is, so I decided I should at least start reading Dead Witch Walking and see if I agreed with them or not. I was amazed at how action packed Dead Witch Walking was, with a big cast of characters – both main and secondary. The readers quickly realize that Rachel is a strong character, both physically […]

Review: Splintered (Splintered #1) – A. G. Howard

*I won an ARC of Splintered from The Midnight Garden and I’m really excited to read it!* Splintered is an amazing mixture of a re-telling and a totally new story featuring Alice in Wonderland! I am still within the confines of the story, and I truly loved both Alyssa and Jeb, even Morpheus somehow managed to sneak his way into my heart. I love fairy tales, and Splintered really is a great spin-off that I enjoyed from start to finish. Alyssa is a great main character, she has a lot of stuff to deal with, both in the real world and in Wonderland. The way the story unfolded was so well done – I felt like I was right there […]

Review: Ink (Paper Gods #1) – Amanda Sun

*I received a free ARC of Ink from Harlequin TEEN via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review. Ink follows Katie’s first few months in Japan, where she arrives after her mother’s death to live with her aunt Diane. Language difficulties, cultural differences and adjusting to life without her parents are part of Katie’s daily life now. Making new friends, fitting in in school being the only blond and non-Asian student while trying her best to keep up with the Japanese signs and learning everything she needs while longing for her grand-parents in Canada and still being very sad and angry about her mom’s death is a big part of her as well. There were a lot of things I […]

Review: Destroy Me (Shatter Me #1.5) – Tahereh Mafi

Review: Destroy Me (Shatter Me #1.5) – Tahereh Mafi

Destroy Me picks up right after Shatter Me, and it is all written in Warner’s point of view. If you haven’t read my review, you don’t know that I really hated Warner in Shatter Me – he hardly even seemed human. A stone-cold heart, only using others to get more power, killing people on a whim, wanting to use Juliette against her own will… I could go on and on. Then, I picked up Destroy Me, and wow. I realized that Warner might have a soul, that the way he is now has everything to do with the way he was raised, and that while he first wanted to use Juliette for nefarious reasons, he actually fell in love with […]

Review: Influential Magic (Crescent City Fae) – Deanna Chase

*I received a free ARC of Influential Magic from Bayou Moon Press via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review* Influential Magic is a very refreshing paranormal urban fantasy story! There are both fairies and vampires, but they are not exactly the same as they are in other stories. Willow has some strange powers, she can transform the essence of plants, which is one of the reasons her bakery is so successful. She also can tell if a vampire is near, and more importantly, when a vampire is near, it sucks out her energy. That is one part of her power she is trying to keep secret – just as she tried to keep one of her new cakes a […]

Review: Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) – Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me is a complicated story about Juliette who can kill just by touching someone. Everybody is afraid of her, so afraid that she has been put in an asylum, completely isolated from other people, the world, fresh air and sanity. To survive, Juliette writes in her little notebook every day. She counts the cracks in the wall. She counts the seconds she is awake – sitting very still in a corner while holding on to herself. She misses human interaction, wonders if she still knows how to form words. Juliette can’t understand why she is being kept alive – she is sure death would be much better than her non-life at this point. Until one day, another bed is […]

Review: Untethered – Katie Hayoz

Review: Untethered – Katie Hayoz

Untethered is a novel that surprised me on many levels! The story, while having some ingredients that are invariably part of a young adult novel is so original. The paranormal that happens has nothing to do with werewolves or vampires, there are no witches or magic. But astral-projection is a big part of the story, and it is both a blessing and a curse to Sylvie as she tries to figure out how to deal with her parents’ impending divorce, feeling like a pariah and seeing her best friend having become the most beautiful girl ever just over summer. I hadn’t even really planned on reading Untethered, but a week ago, I met with Katie for coffee, and we had […]

Review: Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling #12) – Nalini Singh

Review: Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling #12) – Nalini Singh

Heart of Obsidian may just be my favorite book in the Psy-Changeling series. I loved learning more about Kaleb, and Sahara was totally awesome as well. The overall plot of the series moved along very nicely as well, and we even found out who the Ghost is! The intricate relationships between some of the psy and the changeling packs, as well as the war with pure-psy continued, and there were quite a few things that caught me completely off guard. Heart of Obsidian starts really strong! With Kaleb kidnapping a woman out of a high security place, and for once, he actually brings someone to his home outside of Moscow. It is unclear at first why he takes the woman, […]
