The scars that cut deepest are the ones beneath the surface…
Detective Addison Hale is a survivor. The armor she uses to hide her scars keeps her safe on the job, and holding people at arm’s length is a small price to pay when there’s a stalker on the loose.
Especially since he’s after the sister of impulsive firefighter Ryan Dempsey, who she had a scorching-hot fling with two months ago.The fling she can’t forget, even though she knows how dangerous it is to get close. To feel.
Ryan will do anything to keep his sister safe, even if it means he has to play by Addison’s rules. But when the stalker sets his sights on the smart, sexy detective, Ryan finds he’ll do anything for her, including risk his life to fight at her side.
But this enemy is as cunning as he is deadly and he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants.
Addison and Ryan must outrun the shadows and outwit a killer.
No matter the cost.
The Rogue was fast-paced and suspenseful with a side of romance. I’d not read any of the previous books in this series and didn’t suffer for it. I will however be going back to read the others in the series because I need to know everyone else’s stories. 😉
Addison is an awesome detective. She works hard at doing her job well. She works equally as hard at not having emotions. Emotions equal weakness and she doesn’t ever want to feel weak again. One night with Ryan though had her feeling things that scared her. So she ran. Unfortunately she takes a call that puts her in close proximity to Ryan. His sister is being stalked and it’ll take every ounce of willpower she has to keep his sister and her heart safe.
Ryan is a hot-headed firefighter. Addison had caught his eye long ago, his station working closely with the precinct she’s assigned to. When she finally let’s her walls down enough that his flirting works its magic, he’s all in. Then she ghosts. him. However, his sister is in danger so he’ll have to swallow his pride in order for Addison and her unit to keep her safe.
This installment revolves around Addison and Ryan. I enjoyed watching Addison and the Intelligence Unit work to keep Ryan’s sister, Chloe, safe. It was like putting together a puzzle but having to hunt down all the pieces to do so. Getting to know Addison’s team members was fun and has me determined to get better acquainted. I don’t read much of this genre – a mashup of a police procedural and romantic suspense – and I enjoyed the investigation element. Each stage felt realistic and I liked getting to see how the team worked together. The addition of the romance blossoming between Addison and Ryan only enhanced my reading pleasure. Addison was set on not getting involved with Ryan but the two of them couldn’t fight the pull. The development of their relationship felt very genuine.
The Rogue ensured my introduction to KKincaid addicting. I’m eager to get better acquainted with the Intelligence Unit so I’m adding them into my reading queue. 😉
Oh, and if you want a taste of The Rogue, its prequel, Fast Burn, is available at all retailers for FREE!
Reading this book contributed to these challenges:
I love the sound of a mashup of a police procedural and romantic suspense! 😀
It was a wonderful mashup, Stephanie!
Terrific review. I know how you feel when you pick up a book mid-series and enjoyed it and now want to go back and read the previous books in the series!
Thanks, Wendy! Yes, I will certainly be reading KKincaid’s backlist after this one. 🙂

Anne, I’m starting to think I should pick all my reads from your lists 😉
Oh Addison, she sure has the wrong end of the stick about emotions, but I’m glad the stalker gave some excitement and a second chance.
It was heartwarming to watch as Addison figured out she had the wrong end of the stick about emotions, Sophia. 🙂 This was an exciting and heartwarming story all around.
