Feature and Follow #54 – to DNF or not DNF

YAY it’s Friday! Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature and Follow! If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers — but you have to know — the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.The Feature and Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Rachel of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to meet more new bloggers!

What sets this Hop apart from others, is that our hosts feature two blogs. Every week they will each showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow both their featured as well as our lovely hosts as a courtesy. How do you follow someone? Well, if you have a preference, state it in your Feature and follow post. I prefer being followed via e-mail, RSS / Bloglovin’ or Google+; or you can like my facebook page, or even follow me on Twitter.

How do you handle a book you don’t like? Do you DNF or do you power through?

Most of the time, I will power through – although I have no idea why! I have only DNF’ed one or two books ever, and I am waiting to hear back from the publisher and / or author on the second book. There is a bad problem with the formatting, and I just can’t make myself read through missing letters and incomprehensible spacing. If I really don’t like a book that’s part of a series, I’ll stop reading that series, though – but it is very hard for me to stop reading in the middle of a book. Even if I am bored, or don’t care what will happen to the characters next, or I think the plot is so full of holes it’s incredible that anything sticks at all…

How about you? Do you DNF or not DNF? If you do, what is your point of no return? Do you have a set number of pages? Or is it if something you just can’t or won’t read about happens?

Thanks for stopping by today, have a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend!

  1. I DNF, I have to many books and not enough time for books that drag on and on. I have suffered through some like Undercurrent (that is a recent one) but for the most part I just give up on them. I have a 50 page rule that I usually go by, if I can’t get into a book by 50 pages then I give up. (I have gave some other books longer than that but not usually)

    • Hey Stormi 🙂 I think the 50 page rule is a great idea – I’ll try to apply that myself. Because, yes, there are so many books out there I want to read, I shouldn’t be spending my time reading books I don’t really enjoy.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. The book has to compete with my dyslexia, my boys jumping all over the place, and my busy mind. If I can’t stay on the lines then I close the book and quickly look for another one. But every once in a while I can’t quit even though it’s a huge struggle to keep going like my current read. There’s a whole lot of horse talk and lingo and a few bible quotes and I’m shaking my head asking one of my favorite authors to quit it! I smiled that you will finish the book, but quit the series.

    • I think it’s a good thing to be able to put a book down if it isn’t completely sweeping you off your feet.

And for me quitting a series is progress, I used to feel like I should see a whole series through, not only a book or two…

Thanks for stopping by Robyn 🙂

  3. C

I have always had difficulty with DNF’ing but as I’ve gotten older and my TBR pile has grown, it has become slightly easier.
“So many books, so little time” LOL

    • That’s definitely true, and I am starting to be afraid I won’t actually live long enough to read all the books on my TBR :O

      Thanks for stopping by C.

  4. I never used to be able to (“but what if it’s JUST about to get good?!”) but now I don’t have a problem with it. In the beginning I could only force myself to set a book aside by telling myself I just wasn’t going to read it *right now* and I can always come back to it… but now I know that most books I DNF are forever, and I’m okay with that.

    • That’s a good idea, Charleen, maybe I’ll tell myself I’m not going to read it right now 😀

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  5. I agree! It just feels wrong to give up on a book. I will though, if it is THAT terrible.

  6. I had a horrible time with one ARC. Every time there was suppose to be an F in a word, it was missing. I spent more time trying to figure out what words were suppose to be than reading, so I had to DNF it. I still might pick up the book at a later point of time.

  7. Jessica@a GREAT read

DNFing is hard for me as well, but it’s happened too. It is rare though for it to happen but I usually try powering through. Unless it’s just next to impossible.

    Here’s my Follow Friday

    Have a GREAT weekend!

    Old Follower 🙂

    • I agree with you 100% Jessica! It’s hard for me to give up on a book, even knowing that I probably will end up not enjoying it…

      Thanks for stopping by.

    • It is a very good surprise when that happens, Naomi, and that’s one of the reasons I have such a hard time DNFing.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  8. I’m the same way. I hate not finishing a book and have only DNF a few. I may not read the next book in the series if I don’t like it, but it’s really hard for me if the book I didn’t like is in the middle of near the end of the series. I feel like I owe it to the series to finish that too LOL.

It was great to talk to you this week Lexxie! Have a great weekend! my FF

  9. I can think of a few books that I DNF.
Bonfire of the Vanities was one and that was a bad one to have that happen to as it was a class assignment.
Contact was another. It was way to technical in the descriptions.
And then there are those that are still hovering in limbo on my currently reading list. However, they are still there and have not been shelved or given away. So there is still hope for them.

I love the movie Contact (I watch it whenever it’s on!) and I’ve toyed with the idea of reading the novel – thanks for the warning/tip X! 🙂

  10. I have always been a power through-er. I don’t like leaving things unfinished and books are no exception. However, lately, with all the books on my plate to review, I just don’t have time to force myself to read a book I don’t like. If I truly love a book, I can usually knock it out in a day or so. But when I read books I don’t- I tend to drag them out for 3 or so days. Which takes away from another book I could have started. So I’m going to read about 30-40% and if I’m dead bored, I’m going to start DNFing.

  11. Ohh I’m the same way, I very rarely DNF books and have only done so maybe twice. I have no clue why I feel the need to power either?! Curiosity mixed with needing closure? LOL Like you, I will give up on a series if the books get worse and worse but I have a hard time giving up a book while reading it.
