Brandee & Linda’s Excellent Reading Challenge Adventure ~ Mid-Year Update

Here’s how we’ve done in the first half of 2021:

From the Read Harder Challenge:

  • Read a book you’ve been intimidated to read.
    I Know Why The Caged Birds Sing by Maya Angelou
  • Read a non-European novel in translation. 
  • Read a memoir by a Latinx author. 
  • Read a historical fiction with a POC or LGBTQ+ protagonist. 

 

From the Reading Women Challenge:

  • Read a cookbook or foodie memoir by a woman of color. 
  • Read a book by a neurodivergent author.
    Your Body is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor
  • Read a book with a biracial protagonist. 
  • Read a book with a female protagonist over 50.
    Gray Hair Don’t Care by Karen Booth. (The heroine is 47 at the beginning, but over 50 within the novel.)
  • Read a book by Leila Aboulela. 

 

From the RAD Reading Challenge:

  • Read a book of poetry. 
  • Read a book with a one word title.
    Majesty by Katherine McGee
    Jett by Sawyer Bennett
  • Read a backlist book from a fav author.

 

From the Beyond the Bookends Reading Challenge:

  • Read an #OWNVoices book. 
  • Read a story set in a location you’d like to travel to. 
  • Read a story with an unreliable narrator. 

 

From the Alphabet Soup Author Edition Reading Challenge:

  • Read a book by an author with F at the beginning of their first or last name.
    The Dating Playbook by Farrah Rochon
  • Read a book by an author with Q at the beginning of their first or last name. 
  • Read a book by an author with Z at the beginning of their first or last name. 

 

From the Book Voyage Reading Challenge:

  • Read a book set in India or by an Indian author.
    Dead Money by Srinath Adiga
  • Read a book set in China or by a Chinese author. 
  • Read a book set in Africa or by an African author. 
  • Read a book set in Australia or by an Australian author.
  • Read a book set in New Zealand or by a Kiwi author.
    The Last Guard by Nalini Singh
  • Read a book set in Hawaii or by a Hawaiian author.

 

From the Award Reading Challenge:

  • Read a National Book Award winning book.
    Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward AND The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
    The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisnero
  • Read a Pulitzer or Nobel Prize Award winning book.
    The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

 

From the Epistolary Reading Challenge:

  • Read a book written in the form of letters, emails, diaries, blogs, etc. 

 

From the Pretty Mess Reading Challenge:

  • Read a book by a debut author. 
  • Read a book in a genre you don’t normally read. 
  • Read a book on a controversial topic.
    The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
  • Read a Goodreads 2020 award winner.

 

From the Back to the Classics Challenge:

  • Read a classic by an author you haven’t read before
    The Awakening by Kate Chopin
  • Read a classic you have always wanted to read

 

From the Color Coded Challenge:

  • Read a book where the color of the cover (or the color mentioned in the title) is purple
    The Hate Project by Kris Ripper
  • Read a book where the color of the cover (or the color mentioned in the title) is green
    The Auction by Tiffany Reisz

 

From the New (to you) Narrator Challenge:

  • Listen to a book where the narrator is one you haven’t encountered before.
    The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, narrated by Steven Crossley

 

From Linda’s imagination:

  • Brandee should read a book set in either Norway or Switzerland  – or a book written by either a Swiss or a Norwegian author.
  • Linda should read a book set in either Colorado or Texas – or a book written by either a Texas-based or a Denver-based author (that she hasn’t read before).
  • Buddy-read one book each month of 2021
