Ami isn't much for trusting strangers. She has a hard time trusting anyone. But she's no coward, and she's no pushover in the protection department either. So when she comes across a mysterious warrior taking on eight deranged vampires on his own, she doesn't hesitate to save his bacon. Of course, that was before she realized what one little rescue would get her into. . .

Marcus Graden has been an Immortal protector of humanity for eight hundred years, and he's not interested in backup. From the moment Ami arrives in his life, he can't deny that she's strong, smart, and extremely skilled at watching his back. But she's also destroying his protective solitude and stirring desires he can't bear to awaken. After all, whatever her secrets--how can she defeat death itself?

Adult - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Night Reigns was equally as gripping and action-packed as its predecessor. Not only did I get Marcus’ and Ami’s story, but Duvall also delivered a few more pieces to the overall puzzle. I’m entranced with all the characters and the overall story!

Highlights:

  • Characters
Marcus has believed for some time now that he doesn’t have much to live for. He lost his first love – twice – and he simply lives to fulfill his duties as an Immortal Guardian but does so recklessly. Then Seth assigns Ami as his Second and Marcus comes to realize he might have something to live for after all. We’d gotten a time glimpse of Ami in book 1 and I was more than a little curious about her. Especially when Seth made her Marcus’ Second. Ami seemed fragile and gentle so a pairing with crotchety Marcus seemed odd. Ami however was anything but fragile and she brought out Marcus’ soft side…at least where she was concerned. 😉
  • Plot
There’s so much more going on than I thought. I enjoyed how Marcus and Ami’s romance and their pasts fit into the over-arching plot. The subplots furthered the overall story although I realize it’s probably going to be awhile before I know everything (there are 9 books!). Why are the vampires suddenly changing their habits? Who is behind the plot to destroy the Immortal Guardians? Who or what did Seth meet with and why the ultimatum? All these things and more I.MUST.KNOW!
  • Narration
Kirsten Potter proves yet again why she’s on my list of favorite narrators. She manages the multiple characters and various accents masterfully. And she keeps the pacing smooth while also conveying the emotion, mood, and atmosphere with aplomb!

Night Reigns was an incredible listen. I’m quite enamored with the Immortal Guardians series. I only wish I had more time to listen. 🙂

  1. Oh poor, Marcus! 🙁 I already feel for the guy. I’m glad he gets another chance at love! It sounds like it was a great audiobook for you! I haven’t heard of this author before but I have been interesting in paranormal romance. Once I’m done with the Guild Hunter books by Nalini Singh, I’ll consider this series.

This is one of my favorite series. I can’t wait until August 20 when we finally get Seth’s story. I keep trying to comment on here and it won’t let me but I’ll try again.

So what is their age gap exactly? Will there be some generation gaps to look forward to and cackle in future?
