Lady Sorcha Hay is devastated to learn that English soldiers are holding her young brother captive. Penniless, the only way she can pay for his freedom is by taking a hostage for ransom herself. Her captive-a wounded knight plucked from the battlefield-is furious to be imprisoned by a woman. But nothing will stop Sorcha from keeping Sir Ruari Kerr enslaved, even as the sight of his bronzed body sets her mind reeling and her senses afire . . . With her dark mane and soft curves, Sorcha is everything Ruari has ever desired in a woman. As she tends to his wounds, Ruari fights the intense attraction that ignites at her very touch. But he can't afford to lose his heart to his tempting captor. For when he's finally rescued by his men, Sorcha will pay dearly for her treachery-and loving her could put both their lives in peril . . .

My Lady Captor was my first time reading Hannah Howell and she made a fan out of me. The story was compelling and the characters were charming. Ruth Urquhart – also new-to-me – masterfully delivered the tale, keeping me engaged and skillfully keeping a large cast of characters distinct.

Highlights:

  • Main Characters
Sorcha Hay is exactly the type of heroine I adore in historical romance. She’s intelligent, feisty, tenacious…she does what is needed in order to take care of her clan. She’ll even do things she’s ethically against doing. I admired how she dealt with Ruari, doing what needed doing as well as going for what she wanted.
Ruari Kerr is what you’d want in a laird. He’s fair, loyal, hardworking, fierce…and fiercely stubborn. His hard-headed-ness almost cost him his happiness. Luckily, Sorcha didn’t give up easily.
  • Secondary Cast
Featuring two clans, My Lady Captor had a large secondary cast of characters whom HHowell managed to flesh out so well I was completely invested in each of them and wanted their happiness. I was especially fond of Sorcha’s aunt, Niall, and Ruari’s best friend, Ross. These characters added depth to the story and also added comedic relief as well.
  • Plot/Sub-plots
I appreciated Sorcha’s situation and how she went about resolving her problem using Ruari. Even though she detested having to do so, she ransomed him so that she could get her brother back from the English. Of course that led to Ruari swearing vengeance against the Hays. That leads to some danger and some fun. There’s also the suspense element delivered via an Englishman who has his eye on Sorcha.
  • Romance
The romance that blossomed between Sorcha and Ruari – despite their best efforts against it – was sweet, passionate, and fun. We got the added bonus of two additional romances between 2 Hay women and 2 Kerr men.
  • Supernatural Element
HHowell added another dimension to the Hay women by giving them the ability to commune with spirits. his element provided humor and mystery, both of which I appreciated.
  • Narration
Seriously. I was delighted and impressed with Urquhart’s narration. To keep the large group of characters distinct while keeping the pace perfect and delivering all the requisite emotions takes talent. Urquhart has that talent!

My Lady Captor was an exciting listen and just what I was hankering for. I’m elated to have finally given HHowell a try and finding her writing brilliant. And Urquhart having narrated so well ensures I’ll find more from her as well.
